Rozália "Rose" Lakics (Csuk), age 97, longtime resident of West Chicago, passed away on Monday, November 11, 2024. She was born on August 27, 1927, to József and Rozália Csuk in Rábagyarmat, Hungary. At the age of 29 (1956) she escaped with her husband Steven and two small children (Magdelene and Rose), and her brother Steve Csuk during the Hungarian Revolution. They began a 2 month long journey to America. They escaped across the border into Austria, stayed overnight on a farm, and then transported to a very large and beautiful castle in Güssing, where they stayed a little over a month. The next refugee camp was in England. And, the final camp was at McGuire Air Force Base. A big thanks to the Mercy Flights! Then after a long train ride they arrived in Bensenville, Illinois just in time to celebrate New Year's Eve!
Son Steve and twins John and Theresa were born in Maywood. The family saved money for 5 years and moved to West Chicago.
Rose worked at Amling's Flowerland, Westlake Hospital, Portable Tool, and the Terrace Nursing Home (cook) over the years to help support the family.
Rose is survived by her children, Magdelene (the late Ronald) Rueffer, Rose (Alan) Soto, Steve (Susan) Lakics, John Lakics, and Theresa (Anthony) Smith. In addition, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Steven, and her siblings: Maria, Jozsef, Janos, Karolina, Vilmos, Anna, Laszlo, and Ferenc. She is survived by one sibling, Steven Csuk.
