Ruben Castillo

Ruben Castillo, 75, of San Diego, California, passed away surrounded by his family. A beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Ruben lived a life marked by resilience, generosity, and an unshakable spirit.
Born on November 11, 1949, in McAllen, Texas, to parents from San Luis Potosí, Mexico, Ruben later moved with his family to Corcoran, California. He graduated from Corcoran High School in 1967. At just 18, Ruben's life changed forever after a tragic car accident left him paralyzed. Despite this, he persevered, finishing high school, attending College of Sequoias and Fresno State to study business, and beginning a life of entrepreneurship.
Ruben owned several businesses, including an upholstery shop, the Corcoran Theatre, and Castillo's Market. More than profits, Ruben valued people - often giving credit, helping neighbors, and creating community. Known for his humor, charm, and catchphrases, he was remembered by many as "a wink and a smile."
In 1978 Ruben married Rhonda, and together they raised four children: Fiona, Sabina, Amadeo and Alejandra. In 1987, Ruben relocated to San Diego, where he continued building dreams, raising his children with strength and determination, and always planning his "next big idea."
Ruben was a man of resilience. He never let his disability define him, jokingly calling himself a "wheeler and dealer" as he drove with hand controls, hustled, and lived on his own terms. He loved cars - especially his cherished 1965 Pontiac GTO - family gatherings, and trips to Tijuana. His life was not without struggle, but he faced every challenge with courage, humor, and heart.
Ruben is survived by his children Sabina Manzo, Fiona Castillo, Amadeo Castillo and Alejandra Castillo.
Grandchildren Jacob Manzo, Nathan Manzo, Joshua Imperial, Ethan Imperial, Noah Castillo, Madelyn Castillo, Audrey Castillo, Everly Castillo and Alaya Castillo.
Eight siblings, Jesus Castillo, Jose Ricardo Castillo, Gabriel Castillo, Maria Cavazos, Edward Saenz, Florence Cote, Delfina Saenz and Alicia Mercado and his many extended family members, and friends.
He leaves behind a legacy of strength, perseverance, and love. Ruben taught those around him that true strength isn't about standing, but about showing up - and he showed up every single day.
Ruben Castillo will be remembered with love, laughter, and, fittingly, a wink and a smile.
