Ruben Reyna, 89, was born on December 18, 1935, in Galveston, Texas, and passed away peacefully on August 6, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. A proud member of Ball High School's Class of 1955, he built his life in Galveston, where he lived with purpose, passion, and generosity.

Ruben served as a Merchant Mariner and worked for the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) Local 20 until his retirement. Ruben continued working after retirement as a security guard for the Galveston Ferry, Carnival Cruise Line, Moody Gardens, American National, and Kroger. Never one to stay idle, he remained active in his community and gave freely of his time, energy, and kindness. He coached little league football and softball, umpired countless games, and mentored young athletes with patience and encouragement. He was so generous he once literally gave the shirt off his back to a sunburned man in need.

A true poet at heart, Ruben found joy in crafting verses and sharing them with anyone who would listen. His poems, filled with wisdom and wit, reflected the honesty and richness of his life. Whether reciting to family, friends, or strangers, he made people feel seen, understood, and inspired.

Ruben's legacy lives on through the stories he told, the love he gave so freely, and the many lives he touched through his service, creativity, and devotion to family.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Andres and Irene Reyna; former wife of 50 years, Allie Faye Reyna; daughter, Desiree Hartnett; granddaughter, Hailey Jean Letsos; great-grandson, Milo Garza; sister, Maria Rosas; and brother, Ramiro Reyna Sr.

He is lovingly remembered by his six children: Lorraine Reyna (Peter) Ochoa, Margot Reyna (Brent) Burchard, Lillie Reyna, Tracey Reyna (Andrew) Strickland, Ruben (Susan) Reyna Jr., and Michelle Reyna (Eddie) Giuliani; sister, Annie Howell; brothers, Andres Reyna Jr., Alejandro Reyna Sr., and Juan Reyna Sr.; as well as 20 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Houston Hospice Team for their compassionate care and daily support, checking on him and his loved ones with understanding during his final days. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Houston Hospice in his memory.

A memorial service will be held at Malloy & Son Funeral Home on Friday, August 22, 2025, at 6:00 p.m., with Nicholas Hartnett officiating. Visitation will take place prior to the service, beginning at 5:00 p.m.
