In Loving Memory of Captain Ruben Torres
Beloved Brother, Husband, Father, and Pilot
March 1st, 1945 – September 28th, 2025
With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Captain, Ruben Torres 80, who took his final flight into the skies on September 28th, 2025. He was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico to Luis Torres Echevarria and Carmen Rodriguez de Torres.
From a young age, Ruben was captivated by the skies. That love became a lifelong calling. As a seasoned captain, he spent decades in the cockpit; guiding passengers safely to their destinations and mentoring countless aspiring pilots. To him, flying wasn't just a job; it was a joy, a freedom, and a way of life. Now we imagine him soaring higher than ever before among the skies he loved so dearly.
Before he ever piloted a commercial aircraft, Ruben served his country with honor and pride. He was an honorable member of the United States Navy from July 10, 1968, through November 1, 1971, and continued his service for several years in the Naval Reserve. For his dedication, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, a reflection of his commitment to protecting the freedom we hold dear.
Ruben was also the proud founder of Flamenco Airways in 1976, a regional airline that became a cornerstone of Puerto Rico aviation. What began as a dream became a thriving legacy, built on Ruben's vision, resilience and deep love for his island and its people. Flamenco Airways now operates under the name of Air Flamenco, that legacy continues under the leadership of his sons, Ruben Torres and Francisco Torres, who carry forward his mission with the same heart and dedication he instilled in them.
Ruben had a rare gift; he made an impact on everyone he met. Whether in a hangar, a family gathering, or a quiet conversation, he had a way of making people feel special. His laughter was infectious, his wisdom deep, and his presence unforgettable.
Surviving are his loving wife Janet Lynn Odom of
Kissimmee, Florida. Sons; Ruben"Cito" Torres of Puerto Rico, Francisco Torres of Puerto Rico, Ruben "Tito" Torres of Florida and Fernando Torres of North Carolina. Daughters; Lizette Torres of California, Raquel Hustad of Alabama and Michelle Nieves of Florida. Sister; Raquel Torres de Parra of Florida. He was blessed with many grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Luis Torres Echevarria and Carmen Rodriguez de Torres. Brother; Luis Alfonso Torres.
Though our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing that Ruben lived fully, loved deeply, and left a legacy of courage, and kindness. His wings may be at rest, but his spirit will forever soar in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Fly high, Captain. You will always be remembered, always be missed, and always be loved.
