Resthaven Gardens of Memory & Funeral Home - Baton RougeRuby Nell (Ficklin) Pickering was born on November 4, 1936 in Gonzales, Louisiana and was called home, surrounded by her family, on December 19, 2025 at the age of 89.
Ruby Nell was born in Gonzales in 1936 to Guy Smith Ficklin and Ruby Mary Broussard. She graduated from Istrouma High School in 1955 and married Lloyd Pickering on September 3, 1955. Together they raised four children and started their own company, American Construction, Demolition, & Asbestos Abatement. If asked, she would say that her life revolved around her family and her church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Ruby Nell was active in Relief Society and in the Young Women’s program and was known for her quiet, loving service.
Ruby Nell was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Pickering, her parents Guy Ficklin and Ruby Mary Broussard, and her siblings Jackie Duke and Dwayne Chaney.
Ruby Nell is survived by her sister Kathleen Armond, her four children and their spouses Marsha (Clay) McIntyre, Karen (Phil) Reis, Guy (Tammy) Pickering, and Rodney (Beth) Pickering, her twelve grandchildren (Jason McIntyre, Derek McIntyre, Michelle Hughes, Christopher Pickering, Kristin Corroa, Philip Reis, Lloyd Pickering, Rachel McCollough, Janel Pickering, Ashley Swan, Amber Pickering, and Rodney [Boopy] Pickering), her thirty-five great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She was a true matriarch to her family, beloved by them all and leaves behind a legacy of service.
The viewing will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home located at 11817 Jefferson Hwy., Baton Rouge, LA 70816 on Monday, December 29, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. with services starting at 10:00 a.m. Burial to follow at the Pickering Family Cemetery located at 20715 Old Scenic Hwy., Zachary, LA 70791. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Greater Baton Rouge Area Food Bank or The Make A Wish Foundation.
