Joan Lavern Batchelor (Cooley), 73, passed away Friday, March 13, 2026 in DeRidder, LA. Born on March 27, 1952, in the same town. Joan's journey was marked by faith, service, and devotion to her family.
Joan dedicated many years to clerical and administrative work, but the most meaningful chapter of her professional life came through her service with the International Mission Board. Alongside her husband, Dan Batchelor, she served as a missionary in South America for 15 years, were they served in Ecuador and Peru. This period reflected her deep commitment to her faith and her desire to serve others through compassionate outreach.
Her devotion extended beyond international missions. Joan was actively involved in Southern Baptist ministry across various churches in Louisiana as she followed Dan as he ministered in staff positions at Parkview Baptist Church of Baton Rouge, Trinity Baptist Church of Lake Charles and First Baptist Church of DeRidder. Her presence and contributions were a source of strength and encouragement within each congregation she touched. She felt called to work with young children teaching to love the Jesus, whom she served. Joan continued to dedicate her time to these young souls until she fell ill.
Joan is lovingly remembered by her husband of 55 years, Dan Batchelor; daughter, Neysha Batchelor; brother, O.J. Cooley, Jr. & Jolene; sisters, Linda Caraway & C.W. and Annette Bailey & David; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, O.J. Cooley, Sr. & Nellie; sister, Lorraine Loftin; and brother, Johnny Cooley.
A loving and compassionate Christian servant, wife, and mother, Joan's legacy is one of unwavering faith and heartfelt dedication to those around her. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 17 from 3:30-5:30pm at First Baptist Church of DeRidder.
