MIDDLEVILLE – Ruby E. Willoughby, 82, of Fairfield Street, died on November 29, 2023 in her home, surrounded by her loving family.
Mrs. Willoughby was born on April 5, 1941 in the Town of German Flatts, a daughter of the late George and Lottie (Brown) Garlock. She received her education from Mohawk and West Canada Valley Schools and graduated in 1959. On July 5, 1959, Ruby was united in marriage with Charles M. Willoughby at Middleville United Methodist Church. Ruby was employed at several places throughout her life, including Alegro Shoe Factory and McLaughlin's clothing and shoe store. She was the head cook at WCV Elementary for several years, a librarian at Middleville Library and Town of Fairfield Clerk for a few years. She was last employed as a teacher's aide at West Canada Valley Central School. Ruby was also a dedicated daycare provider to her youngest grandchildren upon retirement. Ruby was predeceased by her loving husband Charles on November, 28, 2002.
Ruby was a kind, gentle and caring woman who maintained her strength and faith through many hardships in life. She was an exceptional mother, wife, grandmother and friend to anyone who knew her. She was a member of the Middleville United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school for two years. She was a member of the Christian Women's Association, Singles, WCV Retired Personnel, and was active in the former Kuyahoora Community Center. She enjoyed spending time with family, going to camp, painting and attending art classes to cultivate her natural talent.
She is survived by five children, Kevin Willoughby of Middleville, Rhenda (Gordon) Schumacher, Jr. of Gray, Dennis (Janet) Willoughby of Middleville, Rebecca Dain of Herkimer, and Regina (Bill) Carter of Middleville; two sisters-in-law, Judith Willoughby of Fairfield and June Garlock of Herkimer, who, along with her husband and children, provided Ruby a loving home throughout her high school years; eight grandchildren, Rachelle, Amanda, Shelby, Michael, Allison, Alexandria, Kimberly and Billy; two great-grandchildren, Scarlett and Tate; a granddaughter-in-law, Amy; several nieces, nephews and cousins and special friend Bridget. In addition to her husband Charles, Ruby was preceded in death by four siblings, Marion Huckabone, who welcomed Ruby into her home during her early teenage years, Pearl Miller, John Garlock, Sr., and Robert Garlock; and a beloved grandson, Ian Wellington.
The family would like to give thanks for the outpouring of support provided by so many special people. Thank you to the healthcare professionals, organizations and home care providers who helped care for Ruby. Thank you to our extended family and friends who have been a huge blessing along the way.
Calling hours at the Autenrith Funeral Home, 7479 Main Street, Newport are Thursday, December, 7th from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., a memorial service will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Mr. Richard Asaro officiating. Spring inurnment will take place in Middleville Rural Cemetery.
