David A. Willoughby, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on January 18, 2026, in
Rocky Point, NC, at the age of 70. Born on March 9, 1955, in
Syracuse, NY, David lived a life filled with passion for cars, community, and compassion for animals.
A graduate of James E. Sperry High School in Henrietta, NY, class of 1973, David embarked on a career that mirrored his love for automobiles. He was the proud owner of Willoughby's Collision in
Springwater, NY, where he honed his skills and shared his expertise with others. After relocating to North Carolina, he continued to work in the body shop industry at various shops in the Wilmington area. An enthusiast of restoring older cars, David enjoyed working on his collection, which included his cherished classic Dodge Dart Swinger. His passion extended beyond his own garage as he assembled model cars and relished the camaraderie at Paul's Place in Rocky Point.
David was deeply involved in the car community, serving as president of the Port City Mopars car club. He was an avid motorcyclist and in his earlier years, a member of the North Wind Riders motorcycle club in NY, known for his adventurous spirit as a die-hard rider, even braving the snow.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Mary (Schmitt) Willoughby, his brother Martin Willoughby, and sister Beth Diamond. He is survived by his loving children, son Justin David Willoughby and his wife Trisha, daughter Shayna Flattery and her husband Shawn; his cherished grandchildren Nikita, Aaron, and Ayden Griffin; his siblings Steve and Bud Willoughby, Jo-Anne Gates and her husband John, and Lenny Testa, along with numerous friends and extended family who will miss him dearly.
David had a heart as big as his love for cars, but paled in comparison to his love for his family. An animal lover, he adopted animals throughout his life and, even without pets at home, carried dog treats in anticipation of making new furry friends. His generosity extended to everyone he knew, always ready to lend a hand to friends and neighbors in need.
In honor of David's legacy, donations may be made to the Pender County Humane Society in his memory, please see link below. The family is planning a Celebration of Life at a later date, where his life and passions will be remembered with warmth and fondness.
David's spirit will forever ride alongside those who loved him, his memory cherished in the hearts he touched.
His family has entrusted David's care to Wilmington Funeral and Cremation, 1535 S. 41st Street, Wilmington, NC 28403.
