Rufus Burns Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McAlpin Funeral Home - Sneads on Feb. 16, 2026.
Rufus E. Burns, a cherished resident of Grand Ridge, Florida, and an inspiration within the community, passed away peacefully at the age of 76 on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2026. Born on September 27, 1949, to Johnnie Burns and Louise Young Burns, Rufus was a man whose laughter and generosity of spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Rufus's early years were spent in the company of his loving family, including his eight siblings who preceded him in death: Lucille Sexton, Nell McDaniel, Doris McAlpin, Hazel Bamburg, Helen Estes, Bernice Sexton, Hubert Burns, and Royce Burns. Despite the loss of his parents and siblings over the years, Rufus's heart remained full with the love of his two surviving sisters, Ouida Baxley (Ronald) and Joyce Medley (Ernie) along with his special nephew and caregiver, Jerry Wayne Bamburg, who all stood by him in his final days, reflecting the deep bonds Rufus forged within his family. A host of treasured nieces, nephews, and a circle of beloved friends will carry forward his legacy of warmth and kindness.

A steadfast member of the Salem Wesleyan Church, Rufus's faith was a cornerstone of his life. His Christian values were evident in his daily actions and the respect he showed to everyone he encountered. Rufus's work was as much a testament to his character as his faith; he poured his love and care into growing vegetables, cherishing the simple joy of harvesting tomatoes, turnips, collards, and cabbage. His pecan trees and blueberry bushes were tended with equal devotion, and the fruits of his labor were shared generously with friends and neighbors.

Rufus's interests extended beyond his garden. He was a social butterfly, known for his friendly demeanor and his trademark greeting, "hey buddy," which he offered to all, whether they were lifelong friends or new acquaintances. His sense of humor was infectious, and his laughter could light up a room. Rufus also found pleasure in riding his lawnmower, a pastime that allowed him to enjoy the outdoors and engage with fellow community members.

Those who knew Rufus best would describe him as friendly and funny, a man whose presence could turn a day around. His ability to connect with people was extraordinary, and he will be remembered for his talent at making each person he met feel like the most important person in the world.

Rufus E. Burns leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and the true essence of community. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the stories shared by those who were fortunate enough to know him. As we say goodbye to Rufus, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man who was truly one of a kind. His memory will be cherished and kept alive in the hearts of his family and many friends.

A service celebrating his life will be held at McAlpin Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 18, 2026 beginning at 11:00 AM Central Time. There will be a time of visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in New Hope Cemetery in Dellwood, FL.

Yesterday

May God wrap his mighty arms around the remaining family and friends. Rufus was a sweet soul and always was willing to help anyway he could. He also loved sharing his vegetables with friends. Rufus you will be truly missed by family and friends. Go rest high on that mountain, my friend. Until we meet again. Joyce Kinard Sproul.
