Russell Brown 1956-2025

Russell Brown, born April 24, 1956, in Denver Colorado, passed away unexpectedly on August 22, 2025, at the age of 69. He was a beacon of love, compassion, and unwavering kindness to all who knew him, and his passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of family, friends, and the many lives he touched.

Having explored nearly every corner of the USA, with the exception of Hawaii. He was also a passionate culinary artist, graduating from the Culinary Institute of America in 1978 after attending Colorado State University from 1974-76. For over four decades, he shared his culinary gifts with the Annapolis community as the owner and executive chef of Northwoods Restaurant, a beloved establishment known for its fine dining and welcoming atmosphere. His culinary excellence was even celebrated on the Today Show with Savannah Guthrie and Al Roker. In his later years at Baywoods of Annapolis, Russell continued to serve his community, crafting custom menus to delight his loyal patrons. Russell was a humanitarian and demonstrated his democratic political beliefs protesting with Joy this past July.

Russell loved to spend time with his children - Laura, Heather, Patrick, Lily, Mathew, and stepdaughter Katie. He cherished their annual vacations to the Adirondacks and Maryland's Eastern Shore, creating lasting memories of boat rides and delicious meals and endless games. His gentle nature, quiet demeanor, and sharp wit set a tone for love and respect. He was quick with a dry joke or a kind word, and above all, his children felt his unwavering support through every challenge.

Russell appreciated fine wine, good food, great music, and the simple pleasure of watching wildlife with his beloved Joy on his deck. He was delighted by visits from foxes, the sight of a soaring bald eagle, and the passage of deer families through the yard on their way to the woods.

More than anything, Russell cherished each day spent with his wife, Joy Sexton. Their serendipitous meeting a decade ago blossomed into a love that led them to Paris, Maine, Massachusetts, and out across the Chesapeake Bay in their boat. Russell loved Joy's smile, generous heart, frank humor, culinary zest, and enthusiasm for life. Together, they cheered on the Orioles and the Washington Capitals, watched the Olympics, and teased the sportive cats in their home. Where Joy was, Russell was, and both of them wished for it to be that way forever.

Russell's generous spirit and gentle soul will remain in our hearts. He is survived by his siblings Lois Easton (Marty), Pam Wilkinson, and Barbara Brown (Ed Tollerude), his children, many friends, and his beloved wife, Joy Sexton.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to his favorite charity: World Central Kitchen, Washington DC.
