Lamar Neville Obituary

Lamar Fleming Neville, known as "Hank" in his younger years, passed away on July 28, 2025, at the age of 93. He was a devoted husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather; a cherished son and brother; and a loyal friend to many. He will be remembered for his deep curiosity, sense of adventure, craftsmanship, kindness, humor, and love of a good story. Born in Newberry, South Carolina, Mr. Neville was the son of Mary Cecile Bean Neville and David Wyatt Aiken Neville, and the brother of Dr. David Neville and William Neville. He earned his undergraduate degree from Clemson College (Clemson University), followed by a Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia, and a Master of Social Work from Howard University in Washington, D.C. Lamar began his professional life as a Presbyterian minister, serving for ten years before transitioning into public service. He worked for the NIMH, the NIH in the NCI division until his early retirement. He learned to sail at age 14, a passion that later brought him and his wife, Helen, to the Chesapeake Bay in 1971, where they enjoyed many years on the water exploring the rivers and creeks with many friends and family. At 59, he earned his 100-ton Captain's license and sailed or motored boats to the Caribbean islands, Canada, the Great Lakes, and from the East Coast across the Atlantic to the Azores and Mediterranean. He delighted in sharing tales from these voyages, always humorous and full of life. He also enjoyed woodworking, designing and building projects at his home, aboard his boat, and for his daughter and son-in-law's home. Mr. Neville married Helen Womeldorf on April 18, 1959, in Winchester, VA. In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his daughter, Mary Cecile Neville; his son-in-law, Victor Mastroianni; and his grandson, Max Lamar Mastroianni.
