Russell Ray "Rusty" Kunkler, a cherished father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on November 15, 2024, in Joplin, MO, at the age of 100. He was born on January 28, 1924, in Lamar, MO, to the late Charles and Ruby (Kratz) Kunkler. He married Ila (Jean) Jones on June 25, 1942 in Greenfield, MO and they resided in Joplin, MO where they had lived since 1966 until their deaths.
Rusty leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories that are marked by his profound dedication to his late wife of 64 years, Jean, to his grandchildren and family. He led his life with great integrity, a sense of humor and a testament to service, whether it was to his country, his craft or his community. His warm smile, generous spirit and the stories he shared will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Rusty proudly served his country from 1944-1946 as a Motor Machinist's Mate in the United States Navy during a time when the world was in great turmoil. His commitment to excellence continued as he furthered his skills at Diesel School in Richmond, Virginia, and Fairbanks, Wisconsin. His work ethic and expertise led him to a fulfilling career with the Joint United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters. Rusty found great satisfaction in teaching apprentice plumbing at Local Union 658 in Joplin, where he took immense pride in mentoring young men entering the trade.
Rusty's passion for dance began in March 1950 when he and his beloved wife, Jean, started club dancing with the Hicks & Chicks Square and Folk dance club in Iola, KS. This love for dance followed them to Joplin in 1966, where they joined the Marble Squares in Carthage. As charter members of the Tanglefooters Round Club, Rusty and Jean graced many dance floors with their presence, along with the Di-ce Dancers in Carthage and Joplin.
In addition to his lifelong work mentorships, Rusty was deeply involved in his community, serving as a Cub Master and Scout Master in Iola, KS, for 11 years and his church. His guidance and leadership helped shape the lives of many young individuals, instilling in them values of integrity, courage, and responsibility.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife, Jean Kunkler; children, Judith Sullivan, Raymond Kunkler, Steven Kunkler, Leon Kunkler and his grandson Blaine Kunkler. He is survived by his grandchildren, Mark Crowl, Gina Giddens, Lenny Kunkler, Trina Kunkler, Damaris Kunkler, Geoff Kunkler and Annie Schroeder. 17 great- grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren, his daughter- in- laws, Shelly Spahn of Grove, OK and Charlene Kunkler of Joplin, MO and several other family members.
A memorial service will be planned for Friday, November 22, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Parker Mortuary. Burial to follow at Memory Gardens of Lamar in Lamar, MO.
Arrangements are under the direct care of Parker Mortuary, Joplin, MO.
