Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hobbs Funeral Home - South Portland on Sep. 6, 2025.
Russell Gibson Lowell, Jr., 75, of Lewiston, passed away on August 30th, 2025, in Scarborough after a long illness.
Russ was born in Portland to Russell G. Lowell, Sr. and Janet MacBeth Lowell (Young) on August 08, 1950. He grew up in South Portland and attended South Portland High School. He worked for various construction companies as a heavy equipment operator. But his true passion was music.
For many years Russ went off on his own. Freedom fed his spirit. From time to time he checked in on family and friends just to make sure they were okay, and to let them know he was thinking of them. In his later years he settled down, splitting his time between Old Orchard Beach and Lewiston. He loved being out in nature, whether it was the lakes and hills, or the ocean and the beach. And always, in the background, there was music. He taught himself to play acoustic guitar and was always humming or whistling a tune. Otherwise, the radio was always on. His favorite artist was Van Morrison, but most classic rock was fine.
Russ's other love was children. His own kids and grandkids were of course very special to him. He got a kick out of all kids though and always felt very protective of them. He loved to spoil his grandchildren, especially at Christmas. It meant a lot to him to personally pick a special gift for each of them. It didn't matter how many different stores he had to go to, or how much it cost. He wanted each one to have something fun that would put a big smile on their face!
Russ was thoughtful, loving, caring, very generous, made friends wherever he went, and loved a good laugh. He had a quick wit and wry sense of humor. His presence here on earth will be missed dearly!
Russ Lowell is predeceased in death by his parents, Russell Lowell Sr. of South Portland, and Janet Young of Vermont, sister Margaret Ann Burgin, brother Bruce Maury Lowell, sister Joan Elizabeth Lowell, and nephew Robert Downs Jr.
