Russell Meyer, 97, of Green Bay, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on January 31, with his loving wife by his side. Born and raised in Wisconsin, Russ was one of six children and grew up on the family farm in Marshfield, the son of George and Ora Meyer.
Russ lived a long and full life marked by devotion to his family, a strong work ethic, and a deep commitment to community service. At the age of 17, he entered the Air Force and served most of the time in Japanese Occupation. He climbed Mount Fuji at the age of 19.Over the years he owned several businesses in different parts of Wisconsin and pursued a wide range of interests. In his early years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, and scuba diving. His beloved dog Barney was a constant companion for 16 years. He was a member of the Jaycee’s, Elk’s, Optimist’s and Lion’s Clubs often serving in officer positions.Nothing made Russ happier than time spent with his five children and their families. One daughter shared, “Dad’s life has been a quiet lesson in integrity and generosity, and the grace of welcoming others so fully. Because of Dad, we also carry a deep love for good food, nature, and watching Gunsmoke.” For more than twenty years, Russ could be found in the stands at his grandsons’ basketball games, offering steady support.
Russ met his wife Sandy at ballroom dance lessons and they celebrated 32 years of marriage. They loved traveling throughout the United States and spent many winter months in Gulf Shores.A longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Green Bay, Russ served on several committees, with the Good Will Pantry being a special favorite. He and his wife Sandy also delivered Meals on Wheels for 30 years, often bringing sweet treats for the clients they visited.Russ was gifted with a quick wit, versatile in the kitchen, handy around the house, and an expert gardener. His favorite volunteer role was serving as a mediator at the Mediation Center of Greater Green Bay. Russ’s many pursuits reflected his lifelong commitment to living actively and energetically. Later in life, he found joy in family gatherings, playing cards, and completing jigsaw puzzles, carefully choosing those that stopped short of 1,000 pieces.
Russ is survived by his wife, Sandy; his children Dean Meyer, Deborah Scheller, Pamela Meyer, Cynthia Hammer, and Scott (Marci) Meyer; brothers Bernard (Shirley) Meyer and Randy (Cheryl) Meyer. Nothing made Russ happier than time spent with his five children and their families. He is survived by nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by Sandy’s four children and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Donald Meyer, Gerald Meyer, and Doris Dupee.
Visitation at First United Methodist, 501 Howe St., Friday February 13, from 9 AM until the time of the service at 11 AM.
