Russell Simoncelli Obituary

Russell James Simoncelli
Russell James Simoncelli, known affectionately as Bud, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2026, in Litchfield, Connecticut, surrounded by family. He was 100 years old.
Bud was born on September 6, 1925, in Torrington, Connecticut, the beloved son of John and Laura Simoncelli. Following an unfortunate accident that left him legally blind, Bud attended the School for the Blind, where he developed the resilience and independence that would define his life. He went on to become a skilled and much admired gardener, tending gardens throughout Litchfield with care, patience, and a deep appreciation for the natural world.
Bud found joy in working with his hands and spending time outdoors. He loved caning chairs, woodworking, bicycling, canoeing, and taking walks on the boardwalk, and he especially enjoyed listening to beautiful music on his radio. Bud also found joy in maintaining his own gardens and fish pond. He took great pride in watching his three nieces-Dorene Deacon, Tammy Cappuccio, and Constance Magistrali-grow into the women they are today. His youngest sibling, Jeanette, was not only his sister but his closest friend and confidant.
Bud will be remembered for his remarkable mental and physical strength, his tenacity, quick wit, and playful sense of humor. Fiercely independent to the end, he lived on his own at 100 years "young," relying on no one and meeting life entirely on his own terms. He touched the hearts of all who knew him.
Bud is survived by his sisters Marion Colucci of Torrington, Connecticut, and Jeanette Fretts of Litchfield, Connecticut, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was predeceased by his siblings John Simoncelli, Ethel Gemino, Lillian Waite, George Simoncelli, Anthony Simoncelli, and Loretta Koser.
In accordance with Bud's wishes, there will be no viewing or funeral services. A celebration of his life will be held in the spring.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to all who offered kindness and support to Bud over the years. Special thanks to the staff at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, the Hartford Healthcare Hospice team, Mrs. Brickley and family, and to Kelsey and Matt Waltz for their compassion and care.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to plant a seed, a plant, or a garden in Bud's memory-returning him to the earth he so dearly loved, now part of the eternal garden.
