George Simoncelli Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Thurston Rowe Funeral Home on Oct. 1, 2024.
George Bennett Simoncelli, Jr.
Local Attorney, Avid Sports Enthusiast
Litchfield - George Bennett Simoncelli, Jr., Attorney at Law, passed peacefully on Saturday, September 28, 2024 surrounded by his beloved family following a long battle with prostate cancer. He was 68 years old.
He was born March 28, 1956, to George Bennett Simoncelli and Doris Marion Simoncelli (née Seelye) of Litchfield.
George graduated Litchfield High School in 1974. He was so happy to have attended his 50th class reunion earlier in September. As an avid sports fan, he played on the LHS soccer, basketball, and baseball teams. He is also a graduate of the University of Connecticut with a bachelor's degree in history. He went on to attend the New England School of Law, earning his Doctor of Laws degree in 1981. He then returned to Litchfield and began his law practice with Joseph Keefe. He subsequently became the Corporation Counsel for the City of Torrington and long time partner of Victor Muschell. George eventually ventured out on his own and associated with many of northwestern Connecticut's most distinguished attorneys. He was a member of the Litchfield County Bar Association and the Connecticut Bar Association, with concentrations in employment and personal injury cases. "I want to help the little guy succeed where justice needs to be done". George was also admitted to practice in the State of New York. He was quiet about his successes, but proud of his accomplishments in creating new interpretations of Law and gaining expertise in abandoned roads & property owners rights. He was successful in representing his clients and, even through his illness, never failed to make time for them. George will be genuinely missed by numerous associates and friends.
Most important to him was his close relationship with his brothers and sister, all avid sports fans. They enjoyed supporting UCONN men's and women's basketball teams and the NY Yankees, gathering together daily to watch games and cheer on their teams. The siblings, all members of Stonybrook Golf League, were always happy playing golf together, whether it was a Mother's/ Father's Day family tournament or competing in the Stonybrook Club Championship which George won in 1984.
George also enjoyed quiet times fishing (always catch & release - especially when he hooked himself in the lip!). He also loved reading, doing the Waterbury Republican crossword puzzles in his head, and following the latest car shows and auctions on TV.
In addition to his parents, George is predeceased by his son Troy Anthony Simoncelli in April of 2022. He is survived by his brothers James F. & wife Wendy, Joseph F., John Paul & wife Patty, all of Litchfield and his most favored sister Lori M. Simoncelli of Torrington, along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces & nephews all of whom are deeply loved.
The family is grateful for the care provided by the nurses, techs, doctors and Interventional Radiology team at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. George was a "frequent flier" in the emergency department, and was well-known among staff for his clever and witty sense of humor, bringing joy to many.
George's family would like to offer special recognition to his devoted caregiver and last wife, Janice ter Kuile, whose compassion and dedication were beyond measure. For the past two years, Janice provided unwavering support and care, giving selflessly of her time, energy, and heart. She was not only a caregiver, but also a true companion who brought comfort, laughter, and dignity to George's life during his most challenging days. Her tireless efforts and gentle spirit were a source of immense strength, and the family will be forever grateful for the profound difference she made in George's journey. Janice's kindness and love are deeply appreciated, and her impact on George's life will never be forgotten.
Friends and family may call on Friday, October 4, 2024 from 4:00-8:00pm at Thurston Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2024 at 11:00am at the funeral home. Burial will be private.
