Russell R. Sunderland, 66, of Jamestown, ND, passed away Saturday evening, August 9, 2025 at Sanford, Fargo, ND.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00AM on Friday, August, 22, 2025 at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Montevideo
Russell Roy Sunderland was born February 6, 1959, in Montevideo, MN, the son of Dale and Katherine (Schmaedeka) Sunderland. He attended the Mills one-room school in District #316 through the 6th grade, and then attended Maynard High School. Russ was active in track, basketball, band, choir, and working on the family farm in Chippewa County, MN. He graduated in 1978 and attended one year of college at Moorhead State, where he met Cheryl Littler. Russ was a member of Sig Tau and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Valley City State University with a B.S. in Human Services. He was united in marriage to Cheryl Littler at Camp Minne-Wa-Kan on Lake Andrusia in 1982. They made their home in Jamestown where Russ worked at the Jamestown Community Activity Center - Progress Enterprises. He later worked at the South Central Human Service Center as a case manager, then became the Managing Aging Service Coordinator and eventually served as Assistant Director. Russ was a security guard at University of Jamestown for a short time before working for the North Dakota States Attorney in victim advocacy services.
Russ had style. He liked nice clothes, nice cars, and was very meticulous. He enjoyed doing yard work and helping on the family farm in Minnesota.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Sunderland; brother, Steven (Lynell) Sunderland of Clara City, MN and their son, Brady (Meghan); brother, Bradley (Mary) Sunderland of Maynard, MN and their children, Toby and Jodi; sister, LuAnn (Lonnie) Hansen of Maynard, MN, and their children, Chad, Megan, and Jessica; and sister, LaNae (John Bendickson) Sunderland of Sunburg, MN and their children, Katie, Grace, and Ian; father-in-law, Clifford Littler; sister-in-law, June Littler and her children, Josh and Lori; sister-in-law, Marlene Lang and her daughter, Kayla; brother-in-law, Duane “Dewey” Littler; sister-in-law, Connie (Bryan) Wilcox and their children, Zachary and John; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
Russ was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kent (Imogene) (Robin); mother-in-law, Fayth Littler; and brother-in-law, Larry Littler; and Bob Clemenson.
