Ruth Eileen (Smith) Barzyk, 86, a longtime resident of Chelmsford, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2023 at Care One in Concord surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of Frederick F. Barzyk with whom she shared 62 years of marriage.

She was born in Revere on July 22, 1937, and was a daughter of the late Merchant Marine, Glennwood and Ina Aaltonen Smith.

Ruth enjoyed a lengthy career as an administrative assistant in several different industries. She began as a private secretary and manager of communications for First Bank of Boston in their corporate headquarters on Milk Street in Boston from 1957 – 1962. After some time as a homemaker raising her family, she returned to the work force in 1978 as a supervisor and sales representative for Best Buy in Chelmsford where she ran the electronic and photography department. In the early 1980's, Ruth was an assistant to a professor of political science at Brandies University, where she utilized her skills to set up international conferences, arrange for international transportation, and assist with budgeting and grant applications. In the late 1980's, she worked as a secretary in a practice of psychiatric medicine in Tewksbury before transferring her skills to a practice closer to home in Chelmsford where she continued until her retirement in 1993. Ruth earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in American Studies from the University of Massachusetts in 1992 where she minored in Spanish. She served as the President of the Returning Students Association from 1991 – 1992. In her spare time her interests included Spanish, financial planning, and culinary arts. Most of all she cherished the time spent with her family.

In addition to her loving husband, Ruth is survived by her children, Robert Barzyk of New York, and Allison Gould of Townsend, her grandchildren, Natalie Barzyk of Chicago, and Alexander and Aaron Gould of Townsend. Sadly, Ruth is predeceased by her daughter Christina Barzyk who passed away in 2018.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, August 20, 2023, from 3 – 5 pm at the BLAKE CHELMSFORD FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen St., CHELMSFORD. Her graveside service will be held on Monday at 9 am at Pine Ridge Cemetery, 130 Billerica Rd., CHELMSFORD. Kindly gather at the cemetery.
