Ruth Burton Obituary

Ruth Ann Burton (Barrett), age 86, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2025, in Wichita, Kansas. A devoted wife, mother, aunt, and friend, Ruth Ann lived a life marked by compassion, faith, and an unwavering love for others.
Born on January 27, 1939, in Weir, Kansas, Ruth Ann was the daughter of John and Esther Barrett. She graduated as valedictorian from Weir High School in 1957 and went on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Pittsburg State University in 1961. During her college years, she was a proud member of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority.
Ruth Ann dedicated her professional life to teaching first grade at Sunnyside Elementary - a role that perfectly suited her deep affection for children. Her students were among the many lives she touched with her warmth and kindness. Children were truly her bright lights.
In earlier years of marriage, Ruth Ann was an active member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Wichita. There she taught Sunday school and served as Director of the church's Vacation Bible School. In 2000, she and her beloved husband Oliver joined Chapel Hill Fellowship. This community became their spiritual home and life connection under the guidance of Pastor Jeff Gannon and his family.
Ruth Ann is survived by Oliver Burton, her loving husband of 60 years; their son Jeffery Burton; nephews Dan (Terri) Burton and Dave (Cathy) Burton; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind countless friends - so many of whom she considered chosen family.
She was preceded in death by her parents John and Esther Barrett; her special aunt Ruth Jones; and numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law.
Ruth Ann's life was defined by care for others. She had a gift for making people feel seen and loved - whether through heartfelt conversations or the thoughtful notes and cards she sent so generously. To receive something handwritten from Ruth Ann was to receive a treasure, and to be called a precious person meant the world to the recipient.
Her personal relationship with Christ guided every aspect of her life. She found joy in attending Bible studies and nurturing meaningful connections within her faith communities. Her sense of humor brought laughter to those around her - and she never turned down a good "Hambur-J," always with plenty of ketchup.
Ruth Ann also found joy in reading and cooking - her recipes are cherished by many who still prepare them with love today.
Above all else, Ruth Ann was a faithful wife, mother, daughter, niece, aunt (great- and great-great-), and friend to many. Her legacy lives on through the lives she touched with grace, humor, generosity, and unwavering love.
May the memory of Ruth Ann Burton bring comfort to all who knew her - and may we carry forward the kindness she so freely gave.

A Celebration of Life will be held on August 30, 2025, from 12:00PM to 3:30PM at the Cozine Life Events Center 1500 E. 21st St. N. There will be a luncheon at 12:00. Service will start at 2:00 with burial to follow around 3:00.
