WORCESTER/SHREWSBURY - Ruth Cohen, 88, passed away on Saturday, August 6, 2022, at UMass Memorial Medical Center, after a brief illness. Born and raised in Worcester, Ruth lived 37 years in Shrewsbury before moving to Eisenberg Assisted Living last year. Her beloved husband, Leonard H. Cohen, died in 1968.
Ruth graduated from Classical High School in Worcester, class of 1952. She later received her Bachelor's degree, Master's degree, and Master's plus 30 in education from Worcester State University in Worcester. Up until the age of 86, she enjoyed substitute teaching in Shrewsbury, Northborough, and Grafton. Previously, she worked as a Juvenile Education Director at Anker House. She also worked as an Employment Specialist at Community Health Link.
After the untimely death of her husband in 1968, Ruth persevered and amazingly raised her three children in Worcester.
One of Ruth's favorite activities was 10-pin bowling. She bowled weekly in two leagues, one with her son, Steven. She averaged over 100. At the age of 80, she rolled a 255 game, including 8 strikes in a row. She continued bowling with her 12-pound ball, until a month ago.
She was one of the Red Sox's most loyal fans. Ruth was in attendance at Fenway Park for one of Ted William's home runs. She celebrated her 80th birthday with her family at a Red Sox game. She had a dream of throwing out the first pitch of the season the year she turned 100.
She was known to be an avid reader and particularly enjoyed reading murder mysteries. She even wrote her own murder mystery, "My Juvies."
She will be lovingly remembered and missed by her three children, Steven M. Cohen and his wife, Bela of Worcester, Marjorie E. Teig and her husband, Lucien of Sudbury, and Amy L. Earley and her husband Joseph of Auburn; six grandchildren, Sara, Danielle, Jeffrey, Jessica, Leonard, and Jason; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Gavi.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 9, at Worcester Hebrew Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Auburn. Memorial donations may be made in Ruth's name to Eisenberg Assisted Living in Worcester and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation in Wellesley.
