Ruth McNair Dore was born June 1, 1936, to the late James McNair, Sr., and Eloise King McNair in
Augusta, GA. She was the second of four children. She was a member of Christian Fellowship Baptist Church in
College Park, GA.
Ruth attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School from Kindergarten through 12th grade. She was most proud of her beautiful cursive handwriting. She often said to us, "I went to Catholic School and the nuns made sure we didn't have any bad handwriting!" Ruth also instilled in her children how to write in cursive efficiently.
Ruth was a very talented young lady, especially being 5'2 and petite. She played basketball and ran track while in high school. She did not hesitate to show those skills to her children and later her grandchildren. She was awarded the P. Beatrice Greene Scholarship by the Missionary Society of the AME Church where she later went on to Morris Brown College in
Atlanta, GA. During her freshman year, she was featured in the newspaper and was crowned Miss Freshman. From this, pageantry became Ruth's passion, and she participated in several other pageant events all over, and in her church.
It was back in her hometown of
Augusta, GA, where she met her future husband, a Morehouse College graduate, Hezekiah Dore Jr. This union was blessed with three loving children, Cornel, Synita and Bernard. Ruth and Hezekiah loved to display their dancing skills drawing excitement and laughter from her kids in amazement.
Ruth stayed home for a while with her children before entering the workforce. She worked for the Atlanta Public School System as a substitute teacher and later worked full-time at John Hope Elementary School in the Chapter 1 Education program. She was a loving paraprofessional and children adored her. She was gracious enough to buy toiletries and give out lunch money to those in need at the school. She received the Certificate of Recognition from the Fulton County Government in appreciation of loyal and meritorious service to the community. She was also awarded for her commitment and hard work for the APS school system. She worked for the APS school system until her retirement in 1997.
Ruth loved the arts, especially singing and dancing. You could always hear Ruth singing in the house to let her children and grandchildren know she still could carry a tune. She sang in her hometown church, Big Bethel AME Church where she was a faithful member for many years.
Ruth loved the outdoors, and walking to get her exercise, no matter how hot the temperature. She would meet her lady friends at the high school track to do their daily walks and oftentimes, she was the last one to leave. She was always full of life and of good positive energy.
Ruth was a great wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Her legacy, love, singing, and generosity will always be cherished in the lives of those who knew her.
Cherishing her wonderful memories are her loving children, Cornel(Susan)Dore, Synita(Darrius)Rowe, Bernard(Martella)Dore; four grandchildren, Christopher Dore, Darrius(DJ)Rowe, Colin Dore and India Rowe; three brothers-in-law, Emmanuel Vincent(Saundra)Dore, Daniel Hawkins and Bernard McIntyre, six sisters-in-law, Helen McAfee, Linda Laverne Dore, Geneva Cole, Vernita Dore, Beverly Dore and Lisa Dore, one niece Lisa Hawkins and one nephew Daryl McNair. Ruth leaves behind a host of other friends and former coworkers who loved her dearly.
