Ruth Dowil Obituary

Ruth Ann Dowil, 75, formerly of Washington, passed away Saturday, Sept. 23, 2023.

Ruth was born January 20, 1948, in Washington, the daughter of Edward Breithaupt and wife Della Ruth, nee Mincemeyer.

Ruth graduated from Washington High School in 1966. She was united in marriage to Roger Dowil August 28, 1971 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Washington.

Ruth's career was in the lending area of banking. She worked for Franklin County Mercantile Bank and Mercantile Bancorporation, St. Louis, n/k/a US Bank. She also worked at Bank of Herrin, Herrin, Illinois and University Bank, Carbondale, Illinois. Ruth finished her career retiring from Central Technology Services, an affiliate of Central Bancompany, Jefferson City, Missouri. She was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Washington, and was active teaching Sunday school and serving on various boards and committees.

Her favorite pastime was spending time with Roger and family. After Roger's passing, Ruth moved to Iowa to be close to her sons and their families. She was also an avid reader, spending many hours with a book in her hands.

Ruth is survived by two sons, Robert Dowil and wife Jennifer, West Des Moines, Iowa and Stephen Dowil and wife Rebecca, Urbandale, Iowa; three grandchildren, Jonathan, Natalie, and Melanie, Urbandale, Iowa; one brother, Wayne Breithaupt, Washington; a sister-in-law, Karen Houchins and husband Richard, Dutzow; nieces; nephews; great-nieces and -nephews; cousins; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Della Ruth Breithaupt; a brother in infancy; and her husband, Roger Dowil.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, at St. Peter's UCC, Washington.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 27, at St. Peter's UCC, Washington, with the Rev. Kurt Blaufuss officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Peter' United Church of Christ Building Fund (please make check payable to St. Peter's UCC with a memo notation of Building Fund) or to the Franklin County Area United Way (Washington).

The Dowil family is served by Oltmann Funeral Home in Washington.

Many good times at family gatherings. Wayne and Ruth Ann were our favorites, running around with my brother Jerry and myself. They were our cousins, my mom, Wilma, being Edward's sister. So sorry to hear of her passing.
