Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors- Milford on Jan. 6, 2026.
Ruth Marguerite Finzel, a longtime resident of Commerce Township, Michigan, native of Detroit, former resident of Novi, and retired nurse of St. Mary's Hospital, died at home in the care of her loving family on January 4, 2026, at the age of 91.
Born on May 12, 1934, the second youngest daughter of William and Ruth Bellhorn, Ruth grew up in Detroit where she was baptized and confirmed at Tabor Lutheran School. She was a graduate of Detroit Lutheran High School and it was during her sophomore year that she met the love of her life George Finzel, her "Finz." Upon high school graduation she attended Walther Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. Ruth graduated and became a registered nurse in 1955. Ruth and George married on April 6, 1956. Ruth was a dedicated Nurse for 35 years working in the ER and Recovery Unit at St. Mary's in Livonia.
Ruth and George raised their family in a home on Penton Rise that George built, before moving to Lake Sherwood in 1995. The family enjoyed spending lake days, holidays, and birthdays at the house on the lake. Ruth was the consummate host, ensuring games to play and gifting her and George's famous grape jelly to the first arrival. In their later years, they enjoyed winters in Bonita Springs, Florida, where she basked in the sun and shopped at The Best of Everything for many years. Ruth loved spending time with her family and kept up with many friends throughout the years.
A woman of great faith, she loved the Lord and was a longtime devoted member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church. Ruth's devotion to her family extended to both blood and found, spending much of her spare time checking in on her nieces and nephews and staying in touch with Joel's friends until the very end. Ruth's hobbies were vast: she knitted and gifted many booties, sweaters, and hats, she was a devoted Detroit sports fan (the Pistons held her heart), she loved flower gardening, and scrap booking to hold her memories. Ruth's nursing career went beyond her years of work, by being a reliable source for health questions/concerns to her close family and friends.
She will be forever missed by many, most of all by her daughters, Melissa (Bill) Turner, Renee (Eric) Martin, and Kristen (Mike) Ohlrich; dear grandchildren, Anthony (Brie Burley) Zaguroli, Lauren Turner, Nicole (Alex) Hirsch, Natalie (Dan) Worm, and Hana and Nathaniel Ohlrich; beloved great-grandchildren, Enzo and Parker Zaguroli and Harper Worm; sister-in-law Alberta Bellhorn; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends who join her family in both mourning her passing and giving thanks to God for her life among them.
Ruth was preceded in death by her son, Joel Finzel, in 1987 and her husband George Finzel, in 2019.
