Ruth Rebecca Leftwich, known affectionately as Ruthie to her friends and family, embarked on her final journey on February 28th, 2025, leaving a legacy of love, service, and joy that touched everyone fortunate enough to cross her path. Born on September 26th, 1937, in Manila, Philippines, Ruthie's life was a vibrant tapestry woven with the threads of compassion and an unwavering commitment to her faith. She graduated from Waipahu High School, class of 1955 she was one of the nurses that worked at Straub Hospital when it first opened and stayed there until her retirement.
Ruthie's early years in Manila instilled in her a profound appreciation for the beauty of the world and the diverse tapestry of humanity. She carried this appreciation with her to Kailua, O'ahu, where she passed away, surrounded by the natural beauty she so cherished.
As a dedicated mother, Ruthie's love knew no bounds. Her children, David Falk and Jeremy Leftwich, and her late daughter, Lucinda Falk, were the recipients of her boundless energy and nurturing spirit. Her role as a grandmother to Lisa-Ashley Dionne, Aaron Falk, Lauren Falk, and as a great-grandmother to Hali'aaloha Dionne, Helanamalie Dionne, Koanui Dionne, and Hi'ilani Dionne, was one of her greatest joys. She was the matriarch of a family that revered her as the epitome of warmth and kindness.
Ruthie's professional journey as a registered nurse, a vocation she pursued after graduating from Nursing College in Minnesota, was marked by an extraordinary dedication to caring for others. Her work was not just a job; it was a calling. She poured her heart into caring for her patients, her three children, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren, exemplifying the true spirit of service.
A devout Christian, Ruthie's faith was the cornerstone of her existence. It guided her through life's trials and triumphs and was a source of strength and inspiration for those around her. Her interests were as vast as her heart, encompassing a love for food, travel, music, and the ocean. Ruthie found beauty in the simplest things, from the tranquility of the ocean to the magic of rainbows after a rainstorm.
Ruthie's spirit of giving extended beyond her family and profession. She was a tireless volunteer for the Aloha Medical Mission, where she provided medical assistance to those in need in the Philippines. Her selfless nature was evident in her constant efforts to uplift those around her, embodying the true spirit of aloha.
To describe Ruthie is to speak of love, selflessness, and friendliness. She had the rare gift of making everyone feel special and valued. Her presence was a beacon of light, and her absence will be felt deeply by all who knew her.
In the words of Mother Teresa, "Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love." Ruthie lived by this principle, performing everyday acts of kindness with extraordinary love. Her life serves as a testament to the impact one person can have on the world through simple, heartfelt gestures.
Ruthie's journey on earth may have come to an end, but her spirit lives on in the hearts of those she touched.
