Ruth A. Maher

Ruth A. Maher, affectionately known as "Ruthie," passed away peacefully on Friday, September 6, 2024, at the age of 98, at Spring Hills Assisted Living in Matawan, NJ.
Born and raised in West New York, NJ, Ruth was the daughter of Christian and Marjorie (née Hollenstein) Werschmidt. After marrying her beloved husband, John, whom she met while he was a patient at the hospital she worked at, she eventually moved to Old Bridge, NJ, where she lived since 1992.
Ruth was a devout parishioner of St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church in Old Bridge, cherishing her faith throughout her life.
Her career as a registered nurse was marked by compassion and dedication. She began her nursing career at Jersey City Medical Center and later worked at Christ Hospital, a doctor's office, and a nursing home, always offering care and comfort to her patients. Ruth took great pride in her profession but found her true calling in motherhood.
Ruthie was known for her deep devotion to her family. She was a loving mother and doting grandmother who dedicated her life to creating a nurturing home. In her free time, she found joy in knitting, often creating cherished handmade Christmas stockings for both children and adults.
She was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband, John "Sonnie" Maher, in December 1977; her grandson, Michael in October 2020; her brother, Edgar Werschmidt and her sister, Eleanor Danenza.
Surviving are her three children, Barbara O'Shea and her husband, Darren, Susan Reardon and her husband, Dennis and John Maher Jr. and his wife, Margie; five grandchildren, Jackie (Janet), Jimmy, Christopher (Shannon), Gregory (Erika), and Megan; her great-grandchildren, Kayla, Alexis, Matthew and a one on the way, and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at 10:30 am, at St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church, 81 Throckmorton Lane, Old Bridge, with interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.
