Ruth M. McElwee, 99, formerly of Hanover, died at 4:04 pm on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at The Enclave at Cambridge Living Center. She was born September 6, 1926, in Cambridge, a daughter of the late William and Audrey (Blackburn) Hawkins. A devoted Secretary for Newark High School for many years; she was also a faithful member of Southgate Church of Christ. She cherished time with her family and found her greatest joy in watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow.
Ruth is survived by her three children, Patricia (Jim) Auxier, Linda (Jerry) Dawson and Jeff (Beth) McElwee; grandchildren Cindi, Lauri, Todd, Julie, Aaron and Shannan; many grandchildren, great-grand children and great-great-grandchildren; a sister Marjorie Carpenter; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband V. Wayne McElwee, who died September 8, 2014; and two sisters, Helen Warner and Bernadine Watson.
Friends and family may call from 11:00am until the funeral service which will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, March 20, 2026, at the BOLIN-DIERKES FUNERAL HOME, 1271 BLUE AVENUE, ZANESVILLE, with Keith Kull and Jerry Dawson officiating. She will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband of 70 years Wayne at Hanover Cemetery, Newark.
