Ruth Rinker Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jun. 22, 2024.
Ruth Marie Rinker, 86, of Edina, died peacefully on June 19, 2024, with her husband, David Earl Rinker, by her side. For more than 24,090 days and nights, they have loved each other fiercely.
Ruth met David at Paseo High School in Kansas City. They both attended KU and cherished their time there learning a range of topics. Although none of the kids attended KU, despite the many Jayhawk gifts, their family cheered alongside them every basketball season.
Ruth's passion for political science continued throughout her entire life. She remained well-informed about current events and was an active member of the League of Women Voters. She always had a relevant news article to share with those she cared about.
Ruth loved her work as a clinician, caregiver, leader, and teacher. She dedicated many years to the University of Minnesota Teaching Hospital in respiratory therapy. As a natural night owl, the work suited her perfectly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Frances Palmgren; her beloved sister, Martha Ellen Killian, to whom she was dearly devoted. They spoke over the phone nearly every day.
Survived by children, Kenton David Rinker, Kristin Ruth, and Lea Anne Rinker; grandchildren, H. Eben Kowler, Emmet Kowler, Amanda Korth, Laura Rinker, Jocelyn Parks, Anna Parks, and Sarah Parks; and six "greats."
Ruth's love extended deeply to her grandchildren, and she took a special interest in each of their lives. She made sure to send a card for every special occasion. Though the cards often arrived late, sometimes even within the next month or two, it never mattered; it only made the surprise that much better. Her love and influence will continue through each of their partners, children, and friends, whether it's through a comforting back rub, a warm bowl of banana and walnut oatmeal, or a zucchini cake for a birthday celebration.
Later in life, Ruth and David took up ballroom dancing and played serious bridge with friends. Ruth never missed an opportunity to continue learning through adult extension classes. Ruth and David always ended each day together, side by side, comfortably settled in their own chairs while watching the 10 o'clock news.
Memorials preferred to The Arthritis Foundation or the Alzheimer's Association.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. I taught Ruth in RT at KUMC. She was such a special lady. Very smart and had such humanity. The world is a poorer place without her.
