Ruth Whitehill Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jenkins & Newman Funeral Home on Aug. 5, 2025.
COLUMBIA – Ruth Mary Whitehill, 95, of Columbia, passed away at her home on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2025. She was born in Colebrook on Sept. 2, 1929, a daughter to the late John and Annie (Mullen) Jeffers. Ruth attended the local schools and was a 1947 graduate of Colebrook Academy. She married Gordon Whitehill in 1948. For many years, Ruth worked at Tillotson Rubber Co. in Dixville as the secretary for Neil Tillotson, and later was a bank teller and familiar face at the Farmers & Traders Bank (now Citizens) in Colebrook. After that, she worked as a clerk at Laverdiere's Drug Store until she retired. Ruth was a long-time and faithful member of the Monadnock Congregational Church. Ruth loved to play cards and dominoes, and she loved to cook, especially her chocolate chip cookies and pickles. She was an avid reader and enjoyed doing puzzles, too. She also enjoyed going for snowmobile rides in her younger days with her husband and children, and later in life she enjoyed motorcycle and ATV rides with her friend, George. She is survived by her children: Keith (Sherry) Whitehill of Colebrook; Amber (Yvon) Riendeau of Clarksville, Nancy (Peter) Rouleau of Columbia, and Brenda (Stephen) Sabine of Newington, N.H.; her son-in-law, Eric Stohl of Columbia; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Gordon Whitehill in 1994, her daughter Lois Stohl in 2019, two grandsons, Dana Stohl in 2002 and Darin Sabine in 2019, and a brother, Clark Jeffers, Sr. There will be no public calling hours. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the Monadnock Congregational Church in Colebrook, to be immediately following by interment in the Colebrook Village Cemetery. The Rev. Brian Grover and Rev. Dr. Robert Potter will officiate. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Mrs. Whitehill may be made to the Monadnock Congregational Church, P.O. Box 307, Colebrook, NH 03576. Condolences may be offered to the family on-line by going to www.jenkinsnewman.com. Ruth was a dear friend and member of the Monadnock Congregational Church when I served as Pastor there from 1973-1976. She was very active in the church´s activities. She dearly loved her family and friends. It was my first church and Ruth helped me reach out to the congregation and community. I have often thought of Ruth as I reflect on my wonderful time in Colebrook years ago. Louise and I send our prayers and love to all her wonderful family.
