In 2008, my fiancé at the time and I determined that Colonial Williamsburg was going to be our honeymoon destination. A brief lunch discussion with my friend and work colleague, Dave Foster, Sally´s son, had me encouraged that we wouldn´t be spinning our wheels when we got there. Now, the fear of planning a trip, let alone a honeymoon, paralyzes most people with questions about, "When do go? What do we do? Where do we go when we get there? Where should we stay/eat? What are we going to miss if we do this versus that?!" Being an Army brat always had me planning ahead, but my free-spirited wife didn´t mind either way.
Step in, Sally Foster.
Dave asked his mom if she would lend me any of her pamphlets, brochures, etc. about Colonial Williamsburg and the Historic Triangle (Jamestown, Yorktown and Williamsburg) in preparation for our trip. Through a couple phone conversations with Sally, I found out that the Fosters were frequent visitors to the Historic Triangle and befriended many of the colorful characters (glass blowers, blacksmiths, tinsmiths, etc.) that worked, lived and played there.
A couple days later, I received a huge package in the mail with about every single hotel, restaurant, attraction, etc. that you could imagine, and then some! Sally had painstakingly taken the time to gather some of her "best-of-the-best" of the area and provide me in-depth details, with post-it notes galore, on the best places to go to, eat, sleep and visit. It truly was an above and beyond moment.
Upon our return, I sent Sally a thank you card with a gift card, to say thanks for all the diligent effort she put in to try and ensure that our honeymoon was a success. Mind you, at the time, Sally didn´t know me or Karen from Adam. But here she was, sharing every single detail she had accumulated over the years about one of her favorite vacation spots with a complete stranger.
Weeks later, Dave informed me that his Mom wanted to send me a "thank you" for my "thank you." (Which was obviously not necessary.) But that´s who Sally Foster was: A kind, generous and giving spirit. My wife and I truly sad to hear of her passing.
Godspeed, Sally. Godspeed.
Sincere regards,
Karen and Vincent Knueven
