Sally Steffen Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bobcean Funeral Home, Flat Rock on Jan. 10, 2026.
Sally "Sal" Steffen, age 93, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2026, after a brief illness.
Born in Detroit, Michigan to Henry and Helen (Wass) Detter, Sally grew up in a family that faced hardship. She lost her father before she was born, and her mother raised the family on her own. From a young age, Sally learned the value of perseverance, hard work, and caring for others.
On May 26, 1953, Sally married Thomas G. Steffen in Detroit. Together they settled in Flat Rock in 1955, where they raised their family and became deeply involved in the community. Sally was devoted to her husband and cared for him until his passing in 2002.
While raising four children, Sally created a warm and welcoming household and became known for her delicious cooking, beautiful gardens, and love of entertaining. As her children grew older, she began working for Flat Rock Community Schools, where she served in various roles including recess aide, library aide, and head secretary. She worked for the district for 28 years, retiring in 1988.
Sally loved staying active and social throughout her life. She enjoyed bowling, golfing, dancing, card games, mahjong, book club, visiting the casino, and gathering with friends and family. Competitive by nature, she never missed a chance for fun. Sally and Tom were members of many local organizations including St. Roch's, the PTA, the Elks, the Flat Rock Athletic Booster Club, and the Flat Rock Historical Society. In later years they wintered in Florida, where Sally performed with the "Pretenders" and made many lasting friendships.
Above all, Sally was devoted to her family. She loved attending her grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's events, cheering them on, and hosting family gatherings filled with laughter and good food. She will long be remembered for her lively personality, her sense of humor, her love of dressing up for Halloween, and her ability to bring joy into any room.
Sally is survived by her children, Thomas Steffen, Mark (Denise) Steffen, Karen (Mark) Ferguson, and David (Tammy) Steffen; her grandchildren, Angela (Ron) Sukockas, Mark (Lori) Ferguson, Robin (Tom) Lindenmuth, Nicholas Steffen, Scott (Jaime) Steffen, Casey (Andrea) Steffen, and Kyle (Kara) Steffen; and her great-grandchildren, Stanley, Stella, Sullivan, Reid, Crosby, Ethan, Audi, Anthony, Andy, Josie, Brynn, Rockford, and Maxwell. She also leaves behind many friends who shared her long and full life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas G. Steffen; her parents; and her siblings, Robert (Betty) Detter and Raymond Detter.
Sally was a special person who loved life, loved people, and never turned down an opportunity to socialize, play a game, or share a meal. She will be deeply missed.
Visitation will be held at Bobcean Funeral Home, Flat Rock Chapel on Monday, January 12, 2026 from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Roch Catholic Church on Tuesday, January 13, 2026 at 10:30 am, with visitation to begin at 10:00 am.
Fr. Robert Johnson will officiate the service. Burial will be in Michigan Memorial Park Cemetery, Huron Township, Michigan.
