Samuel Thomas “Sam” Homesley, age 80, of Cherryville, passed away Friday, January 16, 2026, at Charles George VA Medical Center, Asheville. He was born April 16, 1945, in Lincoln County to the late Marvin “Stubb” and Vernell Quinn Homesley.
Sam was a Vietnam Veteran of the United States Marine Corp, serving from 1966 to 1969. He was also a member of Cherryville American Legion Post 100. Same loved baseball and was an umpire for 28 years. He also coached both football and softball at Burns High School for 32 years. He was inducted into the N. C. American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2021, for his many years of dedication as an Umpire. Sam was also a member of First Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Eddy Joe Homesley.
Survivors include his loving wife of 43 years, Sandy Ormand Homesley; son and daughter-in-law, Samuel and Isabelle Homesley of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren, Amelia Homesley, and Elizabeth Homesley; sister, Donna Stamey; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at Long Creek Presbyterian Church with Coach Eddie Greene officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors given by Cherryville American Legion Post 100 Honor Guard.
His family will receive friends from 1:00 to 1:45 PM prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.
