William Howard “Bill” Mauney, age 88, of Cherryville, passed away Saturday, February 14, 2026, at Wendover Hospice House. He was born January 21, 1938, in Gaston County to the late Noah Matthew and Bessie Mae Mauney.

Bill was a veteran of the United States Army where he served as a mechanic. He was a member of Second Baptist Church. He also held membership at Shady Grove Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, youth leader, and various other roles. He was also an active Gideon with Gideons International.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Pete Mauney (Doris), Jim Mauney, Frank Mauney (Lucille), Margie Homesley (Don), Tom Mauney, and John Mauney.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Jane Howell Mauney; two daughters, Joy Mauney Peterson (Mark), and Karen Mauney Prevatte (Brian); four grandchildren, Kayla McKenzie Prevatte, Ryan Wesley Peterson, William Britt “Will” Prevatte, and Erik Scott Peterson; three sisters-in-law, Melba McSwain, Carolyn Custer, and Evelyn Mauney; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, February 21, 2026, at Second Baptist Church with Dr. Matt Thomas officiating. His family will receive friends in the fellowship hall immediately following the service.

A private burial at City Memorial Cemetery will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Second Baptist Church at 201 N. Houser St, Cherryville, NC 28021, Gideons International at gideons.org/donate, or Via Health Partners – Hospice of Cleveland County at 951 Wendover Heights Dr, Shelby, NC 28150.
