KEOTA-Samuel Dean “Sam” Horras, age 87, of Keota, died Thursday, June 27, 2024, at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington.
Sam was born March 11, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois, to Clarence and Marietta (Reed) Horras. At the age of five, the family moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where they lived through Sam’s fourth grade year. They then moved to Ollie, where he attended Ollie Consolidated School, graduating in 1956. After graduation he began farming. On January 24, 1959, he married Marilyn Williams at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church at Clear Creek. To this union four children were born. Sam continued farming and raising cattle, which was his passion until his health declined in December 2023. He and Marilyn moved to Keota in the fall of 2008 but he went to the farm daily. He loved driving around the country and stopping to visit with other farmers and friends.
Survivors include his wife: Marilyn of Keota; three children: Brian (Deb) Horras of Ollie, Lisa (Tom) Woltering of Keota and Sara (Gary) Horton of Huntertown, Indiana; nine grandchildren: Amy Mosbey, Jessica Horras, Casey Woltering, Logan Bell, Mallory Woltering, Conner Woltering, Trevor Horton, Taylor Horton and Samantha Horton and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister: Patsy Horras; infant son: Douglas and in-laws: Howard and Lois Williams.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, with Pastor Frosty Van Voorst officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries - Ss.
