Sam McCutchen, affectionately known to some as "Bobby," was born on August 31, 1943, in Nesmith, South Carolina, to the late Hudson McCutchen and Flossie (Washington) McCutchen. He passed away peacefully on June 17, 2025, surrounded by his loving family, leaving behind a legacy of strength, service, and community.
In the 1950s, the McCutchen family relocated to Rochester, New York, where Sam would go on to live a life full of purpose and passion. He attended Madison High School and was later drafted into the U.S. Army, where he proudly served for two years. Upon returning home, Sam began a dedicated 30-year career as a Machinist at Rochester Products (General Motors), where he met his lifelong friend Bob Redmond. After retiring he continued his service to the community as a mail carrier with the United States Postal Service.
Sam was a devoted husband to Yvonne McCutchen (Lawson). Together, they raised two children: Samuel "Damian" and Shatrena. He also fathered two sons from previous relationships, Terrance and Jeffery.
Sam had a lifelong love for fast cars-you could often find him drag racing down Nassau Street in his red SS Super Sport, joined by his big brother, Hudson Jr., best friend, Preacher, and brother-in-law, Emmanuel riding shotgun. His love of racing earned him a proud collection of trophies over the years. Sam was also a passionate cook and grill master, best known for his legendary beans and okra, fried chicken, dirty rice, and collard greens. He shared many joyful moments preparing food for his church alongside his dear friend, Willie Wallace. The two also served faithfully together on the Usher Board, forming a lasting bond through service and fellowship. He also served on the Pastor's Aide Committee, always lending a hand where it was needed. Sam was a man of deep faith and quiet strength; his warmth, humility, and devotion to others made him a pillar in his church community.
Sam had a sharp eye for style-he loved men's fashion and took pride in wearing suits that reflected his dignified spirit. Whether in the kitchen, at church, or out in the community, he carried himself with class, pride, and generosity.
Sam was preceded in death by siblings, Hudson (Mary) McCutchen Jr., Bessie McCutchen, and Joseph McCutchen. He leaves behind to cherish his love and memory, his wife of 55 years, Yvonne McCutchen; daughter, Shatrena McCutchen; sons, Samuel (Candace) McCutchen, Terrence (Gail) McCutchen and Jeffery Smith; grandchildren, Steven White, Sherod Smith, Samuel "Damari" McCutchen, Lundyn McCutchen, Terrance McCutchen Jr., Tyra Smith, Kaydon Smith and Liam Smith as well as five great grandchildren. Sam also leaves behind his loving siblings, twin sister Carrie (Hue) Dougal, John McCutchen, and Mary Green. He will be remembered fondly by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends whose lives he deeply touched.
