Obituary of Sam H. Squiers
Sam Harrison Squiers, 73, of Irondequoit, passed away peacefully on September 1 st, 2025 in the company of family.
Born in Elmira, New York, on February 25, 1952, Sam was the eldest of five siblings. From a young age, he displayed a keen eye for art, earning recognition and awards throughout his youth. In 1970, he pursued his talent at Pratt Institute before receiving a full scholarship to The Cooper Union, where he studied printmaking and filmmaking and revitalized the screen-printing department, graduating summa cum laude in 1975. He earned his MFA at Cornell University in 1981, also serving as a teaching assistant.
Sam's talents led him to a wide range of professional roles, including teacher, fine arts and commercial screen printer, freelance graphic artist, and business owner. Later, his craftsmanship found a new expression in home remodeling, where he brought comfort and beauty to homes across Massachusetts and New York.
Sam's creativity was rivaled only by his quick wit, and he never missed a chance to weave history into conversation. Meticulous by nature, he nonetheless approached life with a playful perspective that was uniquely his own. He relished wordplay and wisecracking, leaving family and friends in stitches with his irreverent humor. Beneath the tough exterior was a man who cared deeply, whose quiet compassion revealed itself in meaningful ways.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Beverly (Cover) Squiers and Rodney Squiers, several cats named Ralph, and his beloved cat, Claude. He is survived by one son, Nathan Squiers, and Nathan's mother, Alison Squiers; siblings Nathan Squiers of Ogden, Utah, George (Diane) Squiers of Elmira, NY, Leigh Squiers of Batavia, NY, and Jason (Laura) Squiers of Lufkin, Texas; nieces Jessica, Genna, Lauren, Christina, Haley, and Autumn Squiers; grand-nephew Peter Squiers-Roche; a circle of dear friends who were like family to him; and his clownish cat, Steve, who brought Sam joy and constant amusement in his later years.
A private interment of Sam's ashes will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira, New York, on Saturday, October 11 th at 11:30 a.m. Family and friends are invited to gather later that day at Nick's Sea Breeze Inn in
Rochester, New York, for a reception from 5-8 p.m.
The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to all who have offered comfort and assistance during this time. They are especially grateful to Coleen Jodoin and her extended Home Care team, along with the staff of The Hildebrandt Hospice Care Center, for their exceptional compassion and dedication.
