SHELBY- Sammy E. Mills, aged 92, peacefully departed this life on March 17, 2026, at his residence, leaving behind a legacy of steadfast faith, service, and love. Born in the humble surroundings of McDowell County on October 17, 1933, Sammy's life was a testament to devotion—both to his family and his community.
A proud veteran, Sammy honorably served his country as a member of the United States Navy for 12 years. His brave service included participation in the Korean War and the Cuban Missile Crisis aboard the USS St. Paul (CA-73). His courage and commitment were evident in every endeavor he undertook. Sammy's hands were never idle, working both to create and to mend. As a skilled woodworker and artist, he left behind creations that reflected his meticulous nature. Known affectionately by many as “Mr. Fix-It,” Sammy had an innate ability to repair anything that needed attention, whether it was a broken object or a person’s troubled heart.
A founding member of Crestview Baptist Church, Sammy dedicated countless hours to its growth and mission. His passion for teaching shone brightly in his role as a Sunday School teacher, where he inspired generations through his wisdom and unwavering faith. He cherished his time with the Prodigal Sons Class, finding fellowship and brotherhood within their ranks.
Sammy’s commitment to youth extended beyond his church, as he actively contributed to the Boiling Springs Little League and Pony League, nurturing young lives with his guidance and support.
Preceded in death by his beloved parents, Frank Odell Mills and Nettie Parker Mills, Sammy leaves behind a family who cherished him deeply: his loving wife, Muriel D. Mills; his son, Britt Mills and wife, Monica; his daughter, Haley Allen and husband, Howard; grandchildren, Tyler Allen and wife, Stephanie, Erik Allen and wife, Sara, Lauren Croft and husband, Luke; great-grandchildren, Cooper Allen, Emma Allen, Sadie Ivie, and Charlotte Allen.
The family will receive friends on Monday, March 23, from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Crestview Baptist Church. A service celebrating Sammy’s remarkable life will commence at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Jeremy McSwain.
Special thanks are extended to Hospice/Via Wendover for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice/Via Wendover or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Pallbearers will include Gerald Parker, Ronald Parker, Lynn Parker, and Thomas Parker, with honorary pallbearers from the Prodigal Sons Class.
Though Sammy has gone to his eternal rest, the light he brought into the world will continue to illuminate the paths of those he touched. His spirit lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
