Samuel Tate Freeman Jr., lovingly known as Sam, entered this world on January 29, 1954, in San Antonio, Texas. He was a soul whose time on Earth demonstrated remarkable kindness and depth, affecting the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know him. Sam's journey came to a close on December 4, 2025, in Temple, Texas, surrounded by the love of his devoted wife, Rachael, her son Rocky, her Pastor Royse Cockrell, and her sisters, Karen Clayton and Wanda Lott.
Sam graduated from Nolan High School in Killeen, Texas, where he proudly held the position of first chair in the band, playing the trumpet with a passion that echoed his love for music and life. Music was an integral part of Sam’s world; he found joy in listening to classic rock, especially the melodies of the Beatles that could uplift his spirit and weave memories of laughter and love.
His military service in the United States Navy from 1971 to 1974 saw him serving as a Radio Operator in Italy. Not only did Sam contribute to his country, but he also created lifelong connections and garnered experiences that shaped him into the considerate man he became. After his Navy years, he embarked on a successful career; owning a truck driving business where he and his father traversed the roads of America, and later retiring from Orkin Pest Control, culminating two decades of dedication.
Sam's sweetest memories were made during the holiday season, when Christmas lights filled the air with wonder, and warmth enveloped every heart. He delighted in sharing toast after toast of Pennsylvania Dutch Eggnog, leaving behind laughter and cherished moments that will forever echo in the hearts of his loved ones.
His passions encompassed the simple joys of life: riding his motorcycle through the scenic Hill Country, visiting the ocean to feed the seagulls, and enjoying a strong double Jack and Coke, these were all experiences that brought him joy. Samuel shared a special bond with his grandson, Mason Laster, often recounting stories of life that bonded them in laughter and wisdom.
Sam’s personality glimmered with sweetness; he was always calm, understanding, and astutely sensitive to the needs of others. His ability to express his emotions, shedding tears when speaking of his beloved mother, Nora Freeman (Strange), or recounting tales of his past could be a poignant experience, swiftly turning into moments of joy and heartfelt hugs, enveloping his friends and family with love.
His father, Samuel Freeman Sr., and mother, Nora Freeman (Strange), welcomed him into this world but have also since left it, creating a sense of legacy he cherished deeply.
As we remember Sam, we carry forward the richness of his character, the warmth of his laughter, and the beauty of his memories. A graveside service will take place at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas, on December 16, 2025, at 10:00 AM, where friends and family will gather to honor a life filled with love, laughter, and everlasting memories.
In celebrating Sam's life, we honor not just the milestones he achieved, but the gentle spirit he embodied, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and sincerity that will inspire all those who continue to carry his memory in their hearts.
