Samuel Steven Gibson, 68, of Marion, passed away Thursday, January 2, 2025 at his home.
A native of McDowell County, Sam was born May 24, 1956 to the late Thomas Gibson and Viola Hollifield Gibson. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Joseph Gibson, Jr.
Sam held a number of jobs over the years, but he was most proud of his work at the YMCA in Marion. He will lovingly be remembered as his family historian, and he was always ready to share his wealth of knowledge with family and friends alike. Sam took great pride in his home, a 1840’s-era cabin built in the Turkey Cove Community. The Old Place, as it is referred to, was well taken care of by Sam over the years. He enjoyed making many improvements to the cabin and keeping the landscape looking immaculate with his gardening skills. His special canine companions, Cassie and Emma, also brought him great joy. He will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his nephew, Mike Gibson; great-niece, Kali; and a number of cousins, extended family, and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Beam Funeral Service with Rev. Mike Fulbright officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service, from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m.
Per the family’s request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the funeral home to help with funeral expenses.
