DURHAM ~ Samuel Bruce Mangum, 99, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, February 13, 2026. He was born in
Bahama, NC on March 28, 1926 to the late Jennis Maynard Mangum and Alma Hall Mangum. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his dear wife, Edna Jane Winston Mangum on January 10, 2019, a brother, Richard Talmadge Mangum at the age of 9, step-mother, Ruth Pickard Mangum, son-in-law, Eddie Hill and sister, Winifred Mangum Watkins.
Bruce attended school at Mangum School in Bahama thru 3rd grade. When the family moved to Durham in 1934, he continued his education in Durham City Schools, graduating from Durham High School, Class of 1944. He was a graduate of Croft Business School.
His first job was bookkeeper at Mangum Tobacco Sales Warehouse in Durham. He also worked the Tobacco Market at Farmers Warehouse in Blackshear, Georgia. In 1952 he was employed by Durham County in the tax office. He was appointed as Tax Supervisor in 1961, a position he held until his retirement in 1987.
He was a member of Braggtown Baptist Church, where he served in different positions. He was a member of the Open Door Sunday School class, a deacon, church clerk and a choir member for over 70 years. He sang in the BBC Men's Quartet.
He was a member of the N.C. Assessing Officers and served as State President 1969 -1970.
He is survived by his children, Dianne Mangum Hill, Debbie Mangum Loflin (Aaron), Denny Mangum (Debra), David Mangum (Katherine); grandchildren, Jonathan Hill (Stacy), Brian Hill (Chantel), Brandon Loflin (Mallory), Dillon Mangum (Aubrey), Grant Mangum (Savannah) and Will Mangum; great-grandchildren, Jed, Andrew and Tyler Hill and step-great-grandsons, Tate Runyon, Ryker Jordan and a great-grandchild due in July of 2026. He is also survived by nephews Mike Watkins and Terry Watkins (Lisa) of Tennessee.
His deepest love was his family and spending time with them. He was a beloved father, grandfather and friend who deeply touched the lives of so many. Bruce was the epitome of a Southern gentleman.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Linda Sencenbaugh, Aniyah Locklear and Providing Loving Care for the love, care and support they have shown to Daddy in his last weeks of life.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, February 17, 2026 at Braggtown Baptist Church with Rev. Eric Burmahl and Rev. Eric Miller officiating. Visitation will be held from 11:30 am to 1:30pm. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery.
