Samuel Carl Rutledge, Age 77
A beloved figure of Farmington, IL, sadly departed our world on August 6, 2024, After a life richly lived in service and kindness.
Born on June 29,1947, in Canton, IL to Glen and Helen (Compton) Rutledge, they preceded him in death.
Sam is survived by one sibling. Sandra K. Jacobs of Elmwood, IL
Sam married Jane E. (Finnie) Rutledge on June 18, 1969, at the First Presbyterian Church in Farmington. She survives along with his children Jeffrey (deceased), Michael (Missy), Daniel (Carrie Ann), and David.
Sam and Jane built their life, legacy and home in their hometown of Farmington, together for 55 years, while raising their children, along with their 5 grandchildren; Brianna, Jaden, Corbin, Adrianna, and Olivia.
Sam is also survived by 13 nieces and nephews he thought of as his own and had a hand in raising.
Sam had many "extra" children to love as well, anyone his boys would bring home, he was sure to welcome them with open arms, he made an impact on each of them and beamed with pride.
A Special thanks to Carrie Ann, who touched his heart in many ways. We are forever grateful for the lending hand she has given him.
He is survived by his lifelong best friend, Larry Damron.
Sam was a guiding light and loved his family and friends fiercely.
Samuel was drafted into the United States Army in 1966, serving 2 years during the Vietnam War.
Upon return, Sam enlisted into the United States Army Reserves, serving 22 years with the 733rd Maintenance Division, Canton, IL Reserve Unit; retiring out at the rank of Staff
Sergeant 1st Class (E7) in 2007.
Sam was an active member of Farmington American Legion Post #140. Participating in Honor Guard and Legion activities as often as possible.
He made his career at International Harvester, 30 years at Caterpillar, Rohn Manufacturing, he
satisfied his busy work at Lozier Oil Company, Albert Threw Farm, mowing yards, and helping anyone in need.
Sam was a beacon of light and hope in our community, touching lives through helping anyone in need, never knowing a stranger, attending any and all sporting events of his children and grandchildren, sneaking sweet snacks when he could, and giving back to his community through the Honor Guard.
Known for his strong faith, never-ending strong work ethic, his ornery antics, his contagious smile and laugh, his helpful heart, and his ability to tell a story, like no other.
Sam's legacy will be a guiding star for all who were lucky enough to know him.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation will follow. No services at this time, but a Celebration of his Life will be held at a later date.

Jane, I know I’ve already talked to you but I want you to know that Wilbur and I still can’t believe that Sam is gone already!! I’ll never forget almost 52 years ago, this November 10, 1972, you and Sam met us in Peoria, to stand up with us, when we got married ! And you Jane, that always thinks of everything, bought and brought me Red Roses to hold and a Boutonnière for Wilbur to wear(which I still have them both!!!) We both know it was hard getting Sam there for our 50th Wedding Anniversary party, but we both really appreciated it!! It wouldn’t have been complete without you two!! We go way back when you were still in high school, babysitting for us, then you making costumes for your kids and mine for Holloween, and still keeping our kids after you and Sam were married, and I worked at Marj El Studio and you and Sam had your Family by then!! We are headed to Wilbur’s back Surgeon now in Peoria, but he said to tell you, once he’s up and going again(and not on a walker like he’s been for 4 months) if you bed “Anything”, you’re to call us!! My cell is 309-338-4360!! Love you Jane, just don’t know why we all don’t visit more, until it’s too late!!❤❤❤Please tell your boys hello, if I knew their numbers, I’d have called them tooAnd you’re exactly right, the picture of Sam in the Obituary, is how we “All” Always seen Sam❤RIP Sam, you sure deserve it, and God has another Angel up there with him-And Sam will always watch over you Jane and your Sons!! You now have your very own Guardian Angel watching over all of you❤❤❤
