Taught with Jay at Smithsburg High school. One of the most well read people I have known. We had many good talks about politics, religion, teaching. Jay was one of the few people I have met who I consider a true free thinker. I will miss him.

I remember Jay as one of our work study students at the civil war institute at Gettysburg College. He surely was a wonderful and memorable young man. I loved hearing him when he performed with the Warrior Poets. Jay took me on a ghost tour on campus one night , one I had given many times myself, he was such a good story teller that he gave me goose bumps. I think of him often and will miss him dearly.

While I am not closely acquainted with Jay, I did know him from high school. He was a few grades ahead of me, but I did recall him just by reading the name. It was by coincidence that I was on this page and came across the obituary. I am very sorry to hear of the loss. Many prayers.

Always the precocious one--I remember Jay as a toddler walking around with books he wanted read to him and how he always corrected my pronunciation of dinosaur names.

My daughter had Mr. Spiese for her 6th grade teacher. She had to get used to his way of teaching inserting humor lol. After she did he became one of her favorite teachers ever! She did not like social studies until he sparked her interest. She continued to visit him even after he was no longer her teacher until she left middle school. He was a special teacher
