Pastor Samuel Ray "Sam" Stone, of Abilene, Texas, passed away on September 25, 2025, at the age of 74. Born on February 17, 1951, in Haskell, Texas, Sam lived a life filled with purpose, faith, and boundless enthusiasm.
A proud graduate of Haskell High School in 1969, Sam played football and was active in the Future Farmers of America (FFA), where he was taught by his grandfather, Haskell Stone. These formative experiences shaped a lifelong commitment to hard work and community.
Sam's professional journey reflected his entrepreneurial spirit and dedication. He owned and operated several small businesses in the oil field industry before joining Halliburton as an electrician during the construction of the Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant. Over time, he advanced to master electrician and served as a respected superintendent for multiple contractors.
Yet Sam's most meaningful calling came through ministry. He founded and pastored Brushy Creek Cowboy Church in Putnam, Texas-a heartfelt mission that brought him deep joy. Among his proudest moments were baptizing those who accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior.
Beyond his work and ministry, Sam embraced life with gusto. He found joy riding motorcycles, boating, hunting, steer roping, and competing in chuck wagon cooking competitions. Every pursuit was met with passion and a joyful heart. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Darla Stone; sons Jason Stone and Tina, Rocky Thompson and Amanda, Jake Stone; daughters Kristina Burks and Zac, Bailey Smith and Cole; daughter-in-law Stacie Stone; brothers Randy Stone and Janie and Bill Stone and Connie; along with grandchildren: Sydney, Shawn, Brayden, Tucker, Kendall, Leslie, Lauren, Ty, Jase, and Katie; and many nieces and nephews. Not to be forgotten are all the dear friends who were extended family, and his church family, whom he loved deeply.
Sam was preceded in death by his father Marion Ray Stone; mother Geneva Viola Bartley Stone; and son James Rowdy Stone.
A celebration of Pastor Sam's life will be held on September 28, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Brushy Creek Cowboy Church, 12712 Interstate 20, Putnam, TX.
May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
