Samuel Wilson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel & Crematory - Downtown on Jan. 20, 2026.
Mr. Samuel Wilson Sr. entered eternal rest on January 16, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones. Born in Danville, Virginia, he later made Newport News, Virginia his home. Samuel's career included service at Huntington High School and Dixie Hospital, and he was the esteemed owner of Little Angels Daycare, where he fostered a nurturing, secure, and affectionate atmosphere for the children in his care.

Samuel held a deep reverence for God and faithfully served in the church for many years. He was a defender of the word, cherished singing in the choir, and extended his assistance to those in need. A devoted family man, Samuel dedicated his life to his family and was married to the love of his life, Mildred Wilson, for 75 years.

Samuel was known for his infectious smile and sense of humor. He found joy in life's simple pleasures: watching his favorite teams; the Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Dodgers enjoying western films, reading the newspaper, engaging in crossword puzzles, and cherishing moments spent with family and friends. His memory will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.

Samuel was preceded in death by his son, Michael Wilson, his mother Fannie Harper Wilson, his father Rev. John Henry Wilson Sr., brothers Rufus Wilson, Robert T. Joseph and Rev. John Lee. Wilson Jr., Sisters -Bessie Jones, Geraldine Peoples and Eunice Franklin.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Mildred Wilson, his children; Samuel D. Wilson Jr., Newport News, VA, Rickey Lee Wilson (Terrie) of Hampton, VA., Finnie V. French (Deacon Clarence) of Newport News, VA., Charles Wilson of Philadelphia PA., Patricia Ann Jenkins (Joseph) of Hampton, VA., Rev. Dunnell Wilson (Rev. JoeAnn) of Newport News, VA, Lolita Perry (Ray) of Newport News, VA. and Sister Willie Ann Wells, Washington, DC. Oldest Favored Grandchild Yvette Wilson, 15 grandchildren, 38 Great grandkids; 4 Great-Great grandchildren, nieces and nephews a host of family and friends.

Samuel's legacy of love, faith, and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His life was a testament to devotion, joy, and service.

Viewing will be held from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Thursday, January 29, 2026 at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel. A Celebration of Life service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 30, 2026 @ Bethel AME Church. Interment will be in Hampton Memorial Gardens.

I am so, so sorry to hear of Sam's passing and send my condolences to his family. Sam loved God, his family and people in general. He was such a personable man and he had such a great sense of humor. I will never forget one year during the time change, I forgot to change my clock. When I arrived at church there was not one car in the parking lot except for mine. I sat in the parking lot thinking Sunday school had been canceled for some reason and I just didn't know it. Sam came while I was sitting in my car to get the church van and go pick up church members. He asked me why I was there so early and when I told him he laughed and laughed before reminding me of the time change. He continued to tease me the whole time we were in the choir loft singing. I often listen to "Rough Side of the Mountain" and remember he and Bernice Jones singing it in our choir. He has "come up" and is with the Lord. He was such a special man.
