Samuel "Sam" Yep, a beacon of wisdom and creativity, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 24, 2026, in Columbia, MD, after a valiant battle with congestive heart failure, lymphoma, and pulmonary hypertension. Born on April 17, 1938, in Baltimore, MD, to a family that would come to cherish his analytical mind and zest for life, Sam's journey was one marked by devotion to his family, his country, and his many passions.

Sam's early life in Baltimore laid a strong foundation for his future endeavors. He excelled academically and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland. His education was not just a testament to his intelligence but also a foundation and example for his family to follow.

Professionally, Sam's career was as impressive as it was impactful. Starting in the private sector, he quickly distinguished himself as an engineer of considerable talent. His skills and dedication led him to a long-term career with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Security Agency (NSA), where his work was both respected and relied upon. In addition to his civilian career, Sam served his country with honor in the Air National Guard, further demonstrating his commitment to service and country.

Sam was a devoted family man and is survived by a loving family that includes his late spouse, Jennie Yep, sons Ray (and his wife Jeannie) and Greg (and his wife Helen), daughter Karen Liu (and her husband Kenneth), daughter Pamela Jee (and her husband Thomas), and a legacy of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will carry on his spirit of devotion to family and ingenuity. His grandchildren, Rebecca (and her husband Luke), Rachel (and her husband Jaren), Brandon, Timothy, Amanda, Joshua, Ryan, and Lauren, along with his great-grandson Miles and another great-grandson on the way, will always remember their grandfather's gentle guidance and endless support.

Sam's interests were as varied as they were intense. He was an avid recreational tennis player and golfer, finding joy and companionship on the courts and the links. Traveling with his wife Jennie was another of Sam's passions, with a particular fondness for Asian cuisine that spoke to his adventurous spirit and love of diverse cultures. A true Baltimore native, Sam's heart beat in sync with the city's sports pulse; he was a fervent supporter of the Ravens and Orioles, embodying the unwavering loyalty of a hometown fan.

Remembered for his analytical mind, creative solutions, and wise counsel, Sam was a man who pondered the complexities of the world. His legacy is one of love, dedication, and family, and the profound impact of a life well-lived. As we bid farewell to Samuel Yep, we do so with gratitude for the time we shared with him and the knowledge that his memory will continue to inspire us all.

The family will be receiving visitors on Wednesday, April 1st from 3-5pm and 7-9pm at HARRY H. WITZKE'S FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 4112 Old Columbia Pike, Ellicott City, MD 21043. A Funeral Service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, April 2nd at 2pm followed by the interment at Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Marriottsville, MD.
