Sandra Carroll Obituary

10/20/1944 - 1/6/2025
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Sandra June Carroll, a beloved resident of Washington, DC who died peacefully in her home on January 6, 2025, at the age of eighty. An artist in every sense of the word, Sandra left an indelible mark on the creative and cultural landscape of the city, and will be remembered by her passion, curiosity, and boundless enthusiasm for life.

Sandra was born in Pendleton, SC on October 20, 1944. She lived in Washington, DC for forty years where she quickly became a dedicated member of the Southwest and Navy Yard Community. "Sandy" not only loved her neighborhood, but also the entire District of Columbia. She fervently explored the arts, the dining, the entertainment and the cultural events throughout The District. A true artist in many areas, the Metro System used her gentle voice signaling the "opening and closing of the doors" for over a decade.

Sandy truly believed in enjoying God's beautiful world to the fullest. She loved to travel, create art and hike with the Wanderbird Hiking Club. Working closely with the Waterfront Village Community, Sandy was also passionate about helping other senior adults live active and independent lives.

Sandra was a graduate of Pendleton High School, and she held a Bachelor of Arts from D.C.'s Corcoran College of Art which she obtained in her fifties while working full time at The McDermott Will and Emery Law firm on the night shift.

She is predeceased by her grandparents, James Arthur Whitman and Lillian Smith Whitman; parents, Ethel McMinn (Fred McMinn) and James Robert Carroll; and sister, Darlene Carroll Hopper. Sandra leaves behind many lifelong, loving friends and her niece, Ashley Carroll Jenkins, from Anderson, SC. She was a dedicated sister, friend and family member who will be missed by all those touched by her creativity and warmth.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2025, from 5 to 6 p.m. at The McDougald Funeral Home in Anderson, SC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to DC Waterfront Village, PO Box 70372, Washington, DC 20024.

I was sorry to learn Sandy had passed away at home in Washington, D.C.. We were friends for years while working at one of the major law firms in the District. She and I shared an interest in antiques and together we attended auctions to satisfy that interest. She had a knack for selling items on EBay she purchased, always making a profit in the sale. When she told me she was thinking about applying to the Corcoran School of Art, I wholeheartedly encouraged her to do it; she did, was accepted and graduated. I knew she would succeed. She loved to work, volunteering for overtime when it was available. And, we cannot forget she was the voice of Metro. It was her voice recording on the trains to alert passengers "Doors closing." She will be missed.
