Sandra Kay Currence, age 78, of Buckhannon, WV died Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at United Health Center in Bridgeport, WV. She was born August 21, 1947, in Buckhannon, a daughter of the late Dean and Kathleen Reeder Byrd. She is preceded in death by her sister, Jayne B. Carson. On February 19, 1971, she married Kenneth Maynard Currence who survives. Also surviving are two sons, David Currence and wife Mindy and Aaron Currence and wife Sherry, all of Buckhannon; four grandchildren, Kason Currence, of Charlottesville, VA, Benjamin Currence of Huntington, WV, Harper Currence and Jaron Currence, both of Buckhannon. In 1965, Sandra graduated from Buckhannon-Upshur High School and went on to attain her Bachelor of Arts in Education at Fairmont State University in 1969, then her Master's in School Administration from West Virginia University and also her Master's in Art of Teaching from West Virginia Wesleyan's inaugural class in 1977. Sandra taught and served as principal at Tennerton Elementary from 1975-2002, and dedicated much of her free time to education as a longtime member and president of Alpha Delta Kappa, an International Education Honorary. After she retired, Sandra found tremendous joy spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren (the loves of her life), brothers- and sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. Sandra was a dedicated wife, a proud mother, a caring sister, and a beloved aunt. Friends will be received Sunday, January 4, 2026, from 2 PM to 5 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Monday at the funeral home with Pastor J. Edward McDaniels officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Olive Church Cemetery in Hemlock, WV.
