Sandra Garber Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bevis Funeral Home - Tallahassee on May 14, 2025.
Sandra "Sandy" Mays Garber died May 10, 2025, at her home in Tallahassee, FL. Sandy was born on May 26, 1948, in Covington, VA to Harry Mays Jr and Billie McCallister. Sandy lived in Virginia until her marriage to William Cole Garber Jr ("Bill") when they moved to Tallahassee. Bill & Sandy were married for 56 years prior to Bill's death in January 2024. Sandy worked in human resources for the State of Florida for 33 years in various Agencies before retiring. When not working, her greatest joy was watching her two sons play baseball. Through the years many vacations, birthdays and anniversaries were spent at the ballpark. After retirement Sandy enjoyed spending time with her grandkids. Her family meant the world to her. Sandy is survived by her son Bill Garber (Michele) and their children Sydney (23) and Cody (17); her son Brian Garber (Elizabeth) and their children Cole (17) and Bryce (12). Sandy was preceded in death by her parents Harry Mays (Barbara) and Billie McCallister (Jack); and her beloved husband Bill. Sandy was adamant about not having a funeral or celebration in her honor. Instead, she asks all her friends and family to "go out to eat on or as close to May 25th as possible" to remember and celebrate her. May 25th is her wedding anniversary. She will be greatly missed by her friends and family. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to our local animal shelter at www.animalshelterfoundation.org. Todd Wahlquist is assisting the family with their arrangements (850-385-2193, www.bevisfh.com).

To the Garber Family,
I am truly sorry for the loss of your mother. I will always remember the years of baseball our parents spent together at the batting cage and at the field. I know it has been years since we have seen each other but when I learned of your mothers passing, I wanted to let you know I was thinking of you guys. God Bless you and your families.

To the Garber Family: I am saddened to hear of the passing of Sandy. She was very inspirational in the success of my career and well being of my children. I worked 5 years with Sandy at the AHCA , she was my boss. Often, she said no one is Michelle´s boss! But I respected and love her dearly! We shared so many laughs, luncheons and she never missed my three kid´s birthdays. When I loss my grandmother. She told my mom she was my white mama! I loss my mom in December now I´ve loss another Mom! Sandy launched my belief in knowing and shining in my true worth which eventually landed me the HR Officers position at the Florida Supreme Court. I remember calling her to share the good news and she was not surprised at all! Her and James Hayes were the best teachers a girl could ever have! It´s not often you find a person who truly believes in you!
