Marvin Powell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Abbey Funeral Home and Tallahassee Memory Gardens - Tallahassee on Feb. 20, 2026.
Marvin Lucine Powell, Sr, 84, passed away peacefully at his son's home in Tallahassee on February

16, 2026. He was born February 25, 1941, in Toxey Alabama to the late Rev JH "Hill" Powell and Merle Grimes Powell in a house made from train boxcars. The family moved around LA (lower AL) to churches his father pastored but ended up moving to Central FL where Marvin grew up and graduated from Winter Haven High School.

He started working with Trawick Telecommunications in Chipley FL. When he was transferred to Tallahassee, he met and married Judith Wollschlager and they were blessed with a son. He felt a calling to become a pastor, so he enrolled at Southeastern Bible College in Lakeland while assisting his father in his churches. In the years that followed Marvin moved back and forth from Winter Haven to Tallahassee and he and Judy welcomed a daughter. He continued to work in telecommunications, helping his son start a successful business, Business Communications Inc (BCI). He also trained and worked with Tennessee Walking horses, he managed and owned tire stores and he pastored churches in Ariton Alabama and Havana Florida.

He loved telling jokes and being Bubba, the BBQ pitmaster. He cared for Judy for many years when a brain tumor left her disabled. After her death he married Brenda and they worked for Leon County Schools in the cafeterias and later driving buses. They enjoyed their retirement as campground hosts primarily in GA where they developed wonderful friendships in the camping community. Health challenges and the death of his wife Brenda from leukemia prompted him to move in with his son in Tallahassee. He was able to enjoy visits from the grands and great grandchildren and phone calls from friends and family until his passing.

He is survived by son, Marvin (Glenn) Powell, Jr, daughter, Kim (John) Sloan, sister-in-law, Laurie Beth (Brad) Hull, grandchildren, Audrey (Wayne) Haas, Emily (Brent) Philpot, Justin (Samantha) Powell, Jordan Powell, Clint (Catherine) Powell, Caleb Sloan, Rebecca (Justin) Jones, Jesse Sloan; Stepchildren, Stephanie Connell, Amanda (Justin) Anzalone, Jonathan (Naomi) Connell; 13 great grands, Naomi, Titus, Areli, Tirza, Lydia, Anna, Seneca, Stark, James, Lily, Max, Malik, a June baby and 3 step grands, Dillon, Oliver and Kadence, nieces, nephews, cousins and many beloved friends.

He is predeceased by his parents, wives, siblings and their spouses, Jewel (Gene) Casey, MA

(Gerrie) Powell, Johnny (Betty Jo) Powell, Louis (Marynell) Powell, Brother-in-law, Lynn (Georgianna) Wollschlager.
