Sandra Luxenberg Obituary

Sandra Rosen Luxenberg entered into rest on March 5, 2025 at the age of 87.

Mrs. Luxenberg was predeceased by her beloved husband of 63 years, Malcolm Neuwahl Luxenberg, M.D., and is survived by her son Steven Neuwahl Luxenberg, M.D., daughter Cathy Luxenberg Barnard (David), and grandsons Malcolm Barnard and Evan Barnard. She was predeceased by her parents, Samuel F. Rosen, M.D. and Estelle S. Rosen.

Mrs. Luxenberg was born May 30, 1937 in Savannah, GA, where she danced ballet and graduated from Savannah High School. She attended Sophie Newcomb College in New Orleans, LA, where she met her future husband, who was a student at nearby Tulane. Mrs. Luxenberg was a graduate of the Laboratory Technology School at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL, and worked for many years as a laboratory technologist and blood banker.

Mrs. Luxenberg was a devoted and loving wife, mother, daughter, and homemaker, and greatly enjoyed raising and caring for her family. She was a gourmet cook and baker known for her custom cakes, and shared her talents and cooking with many others. She was a former president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology, active in the MCG Faculty Wives Club, and a member of the Country Club Hills Garden Club. She loved many types of music, enjoyed live performances, and played piano, guitar and harp. In addition to cooking, Mrs. Luxenberg loved playing tennis and sewing and created a tennis shirt business. She also loved travelling, enjoying many wonderful trips with her husband and family. She loved the family dogs, and led a state campaign to raise awareness about the importance of rabies vaccinations. She also supported community initiatives for women's health and mental health programs. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family, especially at Tybee Island, which was her favorite place to be. She advocated tirelessly for the conservation of Tybee Island and the Georgia coast.

The family is grateful for the companionship and attention provided by a number of devoted caregivers over the years, as well as the staff in the Pavilion at Brandon Wilde.

A private graveside service and burial will be held at Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, GA.

A memorial service will be held at Brandon Wilde, 4275 Owens Road, Evans, GA at a future date.
