Dr. Edwin Luxenberg Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Gundrum Funeral Home & Crematory - Logansport on Jan. 5, 2024.

Dr. Edwin R. Luxenberg, 87, of Logansport, passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2024.
Born on October 4, 1936, in Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Luxenberg is the son of the late Jack and Sylvia (Tumbler) Luxenberg. Surviving along with his wife, Evelyn M. Luxenberg, are daughters, Robin (Jim) Petkovich of Greenwood; Amy (Bill) Christensen of Logansport; sons, Jeffrey (Sarah) Luxenberg of Logansport; and Michael Luxenberg of Leander, TX; grandchildren, Joey and Madison Christensen; Hunter and Austin Petkovich; Grayson Long; and a sister, Joy Goldenberg of Stoughton, MA.
Dr. Luxenberg, a pediatrician, dedicated his life to the field of pediatrics and the children and families of Logansport. After receiving his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland in 1956 and his M.D. degree from the same university in 1962, he served his internship in pediatrics at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore where he was resident and chief resident in pediatrics from 1963-1965.
After his residency, Dr. Luxenberg was awarded a fellowship in child psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Hospital. This one-year program included an instructorship in the medical care clinic of the new Children’s Medical and Surgical Center at John Hopkins.
After he completed the program, he entered private practice in Baltimore and continued his instructor position in pediatrics at the hospital. He was also on the staff of Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, Greater Baltimore Medical Center, and North Charles General Hospital. Throughout this time, from 1963-1971, Dr. Luxenberg served in the US Army Reserve.
After hearing about Logansport through an advertisement in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Dr. Luxenberg came to Logansport in 1971 to join the medical staff at the Howard Clinic. It was a stretch for him and wife Evelyn as they had never been west of Pittsburgh. Considering locations in New York and North Dakota, they chose Logansport because of the practice opportunity and because it seemed like a great place to raise kids.
During that time, he also served as a member on the board of directors of the Guidance Center, a mental health clinic serving children and adults. When the Howard Clinic closed its doors suddenly in 1974, Dr. Richard Glendening graciously offered office space, where Dr. Luxenberg served thousands of children and families before moving his practice to Logansport Memorial Hospital in 1996.
Over the years, Dr. Luxenberg was appointed to the Cass County Board of Health, acted as Medical Advisor to the local March of Dimes, participated on Cass County Welfare Department’s Child Protection team, held the office of Chief of Staff at Logansport Memorial Hospital multiple years, and served as Medical Director of Camelot Care Center for decades. In addition to being an instructor during his early career, he also mentored various medical students as well as oversaw the practice of pediatric nurse practitioners.
He was a member of the American Medical Association, MedChi Medical Society of Maryland, Indiana Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and Cass County Medical Society.
In addition to his commitment and dedication to the mental and physical health of children, Dr. Luxenberg also embraced the community. Known to many as “Lux,” his subtle dry humor and calm demeanor put many at ease. He loved attending Logansport High School basketball and football games and proudly displayed his Berry Booster tag on his front door. He also enjoyed both Junior Civic and Civic Theater performances at McHale auditorium. He liked helping Little League teams Rockwell, F & M Bank, and Alpha and chaperoning various school field trips for his children.
A private family burial was held at Mount Hope Cemetery in Logansport. Gundrum Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements. Memorial messages may be posted to the funeral home website: www.gundrumfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, the family has kindly requested donations be made to the Dr. Edwin R. Luxenberg Foundation, P.O. Box 742, Logansport, IN 46947. This foundation has been established to honor and celebrate Dr. Luxenberg’s legacy serving the mental and physical health needs of children and their families by supporting local organizations and providing scholarships to students pursuing a career in healthcare.
